LONDON, UK (MTV) - Rock band Nirvana's video to Smells Like Teen Spirit has emerged as the most played on MTV in the UK and Ireland.

The results were released by the cable and satellite music channel on Thursday to mark the 15th anniversary of MTV's first broadcast in Europe.

The Nirvana hit beat the video for Wonderwall by Oasis, which came in second.
Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden came third, followed by Sabotage by the Beastie Boys and Loser from Beck.

Top 10 videos

1. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
2. Wonderwall - Oasis
3. Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
4. Sabotage - Beastie Boys
5. Loser - Beck
6. Buddy Holly - Weezer
7. Ironic - Alanis Morissette
8. Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai
9.Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
10.Losing My Religion - REM

Seattle band Nirvana's video features the band playing in a dimly-lit sports hall with cheerleaders dancing in moody lighting.
Smells Like Teen Spirit was released in 1991. Its highest chart placing was number seven. But the track has become a grunge classic and an anthem for disenchanted youth.
The suicide of the band's lead singer Kurt Cobain in 1994 has added to the Nirvana's mythical status.

Elsewhere in the MTV video poll, just three of the top 15 were made by British acts.
They included the video to Jamiroquai's Virtual Insanity at number eight. It shows singer Jay Kay dancing in a room with a moving floor.
Verve's Bittersweet Symphony, featuring singer Richard Ashcroft striding along an inner city pavement, came in at number nine.

The rest of the top 15 featured US bands, including the Beastie Boys with Sabotage, Weezer's Buddy Holly and REM's video to Losing My Religion.

All will be featured on MTV Europe this weekend as the channel showcases its choice of the 100 best videos of the past decade to mark its anniversary.
