Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation) - Elvis's "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock," Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?," Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City," The Coasters' "Yakety Yak," and the record-setting Broadway musical revue, "Smokey Joe's Cafe" - these and dozens of other R&B and rock and roll hits were created by the legendary, Grammy Award-winning songwriters, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
Leiber & Stoller will be honored in person at the 2007 Gala Benefit Concert of the Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation on Monday, November 26, 7 p.m. at Carnegie Hall.
Honoring Leiber & Stoller in performance will be the evening's host, actor and director Rob Reiner; The New York Pops, conducted by "A Chorus Line" composer Marvin Hamlisch; headliners Natalie Cole, Donald Fagen (of Steely Dan), Ben E. King, Chuck Jackson, and stars from the original cast of "Smokey Joe's Cafe," Brenda Braxton, B.J. Crosby, and Victor Trent Cook; plus Corky Hale, Sally Kellerman, Gustavo Santaolalla, Nino Tempo, Tricia Tahara, Chuck Cooper, Eugene Fleming, Ty Stephens, Freddie Roman, and WQXR's Midge Woolsey.
The Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation's special Humanitarian of the Year Award will be presented to the Ford Motor Company.
The benefit concert is produced by Barry Levitt and Herb Strauss.
The Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation was created by Herb and Evelyn Strauss in memory of their daughter, Lauri, who died of leukemia at the age of 26. The Foundation's Discovery Research Grants provide seed money for innovative research projects conducted at many of the nation's leading medical institutions. To date, the Foundation has granted 96 Discovery Grants, totaling $3.5 million. These grants, in turn, have generated over $140 million in additional research funding. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Foundation.
