Lebanon, TN. (Top40 Charts/ Cumberland University) - On Saturday, May 3, Cumberland University will honor Wilson County resident and country music icon Charlie Daniels and his wife, Hazel, as part of the University's 166th Commencement Ceremony. A music legend whose career has spanned more than five decades, Daniels and his wife will be presented with the University's Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, according to CU President Dr. Harvill C. Eaton.
The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards were established by the New York Southern Society in 1925 in memory of Mr. Sullivan, a Southerner who became a prominent lawyer, businessman and philanthropist in New York during the late 19th century.
Each year, Cumberland University presents an Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award to a deserving member of the community for their service and dedication to helping others.
"The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award is presented to a community member who ennobles and beautifies living and binds people in mutual love and helpfulness. Charlie and Hazel Daniels have always championed service above self and have led truly inspiring lives. We are proud to present them with this prestigious award," Eaton remarked.
While Charlie Daniels, a recent inductee of the Grand Ole Opry, is known around the world for his incredible career in music, he and his wife were selected to receive the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for their unwavering commitment to helping those in need.
"It's amazing to me how Charlie and Hazel, who have no doubt kept some of the busiest schedules in music over the years, always found plenty of time to serve others. They are a shining example of the importance of teamwork and, therefore, ideal examples for our graduates. From their support of our brave military men and women to their contributions to young people in need, this loving couple represents what it means to have a servant's heart," Eaton said.
"It is a very special thing to be honored by your friends and neighbors," Charlie Daniels said of the award.
