LONDON, UK (Top40 Charts/ HyperMEDIA Recordings) -
Fresh out of Sheffield, England, electro-pop-rock duo Scarlet BLONDE is dropping their EP 'Bedroom Superstars' (on their own HyperMEDIA Recordings) on the World this fall, in preparation for the upcoming full-length 'Acerbic,' set to follow in March 2008.
On 'Bedroom Superstars', collaborators Ditch (aka Richard Godbehere, on synths, programming and Bass guitar) and DawnyVic (aka Dawn Firth, on vocals, guitars, live drums) serve up shimmering slices of pop candy much in the tradition of their influences, which span just about everything from 80's synth and 70's punk to New Wave, hip-hop, and full-on in-your-face rock.
Dawn and Richard first met in school when they were only four years old, and fell in and out of touch over the years until they re-met at a mutual friend's gig in 2001. From then on, they worked together on various musical projects, until they decided to form Scarlet BLONDE in 2003.
The duo's colorful past informs much of their unique approach to music, with a biting wit seeping through their pop-rock wall of sound. Ditch's love life seems ripe for tabloid exploitation, having been married to a bisexual porn star, and DawnyVic has already claimed a seat among the UK's rock royalty due to her exceptional axe mastery.
From an early age, Dawn demonstrated an unusual aptitude for the guitar. She acquired her first endorsement deal with Picato Musicians Strings at the age of only 14, when the owner heard her play at a show in London. Not long after, it was Dawn who instigated the design for the 'Tremolo Strengthened Strings' that Picato pioneered. At 19, she was offered an endorsement from J.J. Hucke Guitars. Having previously spent some time designing guitars as a hobby, it was soon decided that the company would build her a guitar of her own design to spec. Dawn has only continued to prove herself as an extraordinary musician, with talents readily evident on this debut EP.
Recorded over two years in various bedrooms (hence the title) across the UK, 'Bedroom Superstars' combines the attitude of Goldfrapp and the electro-dance power of Soulwax with retro tinges reminiscent of Depeche Mode. But what appears at first to be an album destined to head straight to clubs and dance floors reveals, upon further listens, a more deeply-layered sound indicative of the true talent this duo possesses.
'We like to work multi-dimensionally,' they explain. 'In that we like our songs, both lyrically and musically, to appear quite simple at the surface, but the more deeply you look the more complex they become, almost like a fractal. We like our theoretical physics... perhaps that's why we do that?'
But it doesn't take a physicist to enjoy the multi-faceted danceability of 'Bedroom Superstars.' Give this EP a spin and get ready for the full-length 'Acerbic' to drop in March 2009.
