New York, NY. (Top 40 Charts/ Shore Fire Media) - The Soul of John Black's irresistibly funky "Betty Jean," the first single off of the new album 'Black John' (February 17 / Eclecto Groove), pays tribute to Betty Davis, the funk-rock singer and former wife of Miles Davis. The Soul of John Black's leader John Bigham played in Miles' band in 1989 and 1990.

Take a listen to "Betty Jean" and two other album tracks here: https://www.eclectogroove.com/artists/johnblack/ecards

"It's about an unattainable and unapproachable girl," says Bigham. "Betty Jean was one hot chick. Her music was ridiculously funky, the raunchiest funk-rock you ever heard. I had a cassette that someone let me borrow and I never gave it back. Knowing Miles and reading [in liner notes] about the kind of trouble she gave him inspired me."

Betty Davis was Miles Davis' second wife. Miles recorded his own song about Davis "Mademoiselle Mabry" on his album 'Filles de Kilimanjaro;' and put her on the cover.

Of his own time performing and recording with Miles, Bigham recalls, "I learned from Miles to be yourself. He's hiring you to play your style. He gave me the freedom to do what I wanted."

Bigham is featured on Miles Davis' 'Amandla' and 'Dingo' albums. He has also recorded with Nikka Costa, Eminem, Dr. Dre and Fishbone, among many others.
