NEW YORK (Top40 Charts/ 30 Seconds to Mars Official Website) - 30 Seconds to Mars were the big winners at the MTV EMA's, earning trophies in both of the categories for which they were nominated during the live broadcast from the Echo
Arena on November 6th in Liverpool, England. The multi-platinum band beat out tough competition from fellow nominees such as Metallica, Paramore,
Weezer and
Madonna to win the "Rock Out" and "Video Star" awards, on the strength of their latest successful album A Beautiful Lie and the breakout single of the same name. That song's groundbreaking video took the band to Greenland to raise awareness for global warming, and eventually resulted in the formation of their environmental non-profit site, www.abeautifullie.org.
For the entire evening, the members of 30 Seconds to Mars also served as the special hosts of the "VIP Bar" in the Echo Arena, presiding over the festivities with a star-studded guest list of the biggest names in music, including Sir Paul McCartney, Bono, Kanye West,
Kid Rock and more. The band members are no strangers to awards shows, having won an array of trophies already this year, including the "Video Star Award" for the "
A Beautiful Lie" video at the MTV Asia Awards in Malaysia; "Best International Rock Band" at the Los Premios MTV Latin America; the U.K.'s Kerrang! Magazine Awards for "Best Single" and "Best International Band"; and the Bandit Rock Award for Best International Breakthrough in Stockholm, Sweden.
These recent achievements are just the latest evidence of the band's global success, which was in full force last year when 30 Seconds to Mars won the 2007 MTV Australia "Best Rock Video" and "Video of the Year" awards for their track "The Kill," as well as the 2007 MTV EMA "Rock Out," the "Best New Artist" trophy on the TRL Awards for MTV Italy, and the fan-voted 2007 "Single of the Year" award from Kerrang! for "The Kill." In 2006, the group won "Best Video Woodie - Live Action" at the mtvU Woodie Awards, the MTV2 Award at the MTV VMA's, and the "Prince of Darkness" and "Video Inspired by Film" categories at the Fuse Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.
In 2002, 30 Seconds to Mars released its self-titled debut album, offering up a bold experiment in atmosphere and imagination. 2005's A Beautiful Lie went platinum and unleashed a succession of hit singles and videos that have kept 30 Seconds to Mars on the road for more than two years. "The Kill" peaked at No 3 and became the longest-running hit in the history of Billboard's Modern Rock airplay chart for 52 weeks; and "From Yesterday" hit No 1.
In August, 2008, Virgin/EMI filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against the band, seeking damages in excess of $30 million. 30 Seconds To Mars responded that they are being sued by the corporation quite simply because they exercised their legal right to terminate their old, out-of-date contract, which, according to the law, is null and void. Not a group to keep their loyal supporters waiting on new music too long while they are dragged through the courts, the band is moving forward and self-financing their new recording sessions. Regardless of legal entanglements, work continues daily on the follow-up to A Beautiful Lie in the band's Hollywood Hills studio.
