PARIS, FRANCE (Top40 Charts/ MIDEM PR Team) - Michael Eavis, founder of the legendary Glastonbury Festival, will receive a Green World Award on Monday 19 January at MIDEM. The distinction recognizes the annual Glastonbury events significant and long-standing commitment to preserving the environment.

Created in 1970, the Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts today is a veritable institution, bringing together some 150,000 music fans every year. Michael Eavis and his team are constantly developing their environmental strategy in order to both reduce the events carbon footprint as much as possible and to use its public profile to raise awareness on environmental issues.

The Glastonbury Festival has thus become a reference for the genre, introducing a host of initiatives including waste recycling, using biofuels, sourcing power from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, employing FSC-certified wood, distributing biodegradable disposable plates and cups, wooden cutlery, biodegradable tent pegs, running campaigns to raise awareness among festival-goers, organising schemes to promote car-sharing and collective means of transportation, and organizing sanctuaries for local wildlife during the event.

Michael Eavis will receive the Green World Award during the 43rd edition of MIDEM, which will take place in Cannes, from 18-21 January 2009.
The first Green World Award, presented at MIDEM 2008, paid tribute to the organisers of Live Earth, the Roskilde Festival and the Paleo Festival Nyon.
