LOS ANGELES (Top40 Charts/ Threadhead Records) - On November 18, 2008, at Zion Hill Baptist Church in the historic Treme neighborhood of New Orleans, a very special night of music was captured on tape. Glen
David Andrews, accompanied by the Zion Hill choir and an all-star band of family and friends, made a joyful noise as they recorded a live gospel CD before a packed congregation of music lovers. The CD, on Threadhead Records, features gospel standards, many of which were anthems of the civil rights movement, and a new original song, the title track, Walking Through Heaven's Gate, penned by Glen
David and Paul Sanchez. The CD features Glen's band along with an all-star lineup of New Orleans best, including Troy Trombone Shorty Andrews, John Boutte, Glen Andrews (ReBirth), Revert Andrews, and Paul Sanchez. Many of them, along with other special guests, will be part of the 9:00PM performance at Tipitina's on January 19th,
Martin Luther King Day, the evening before our first African-American President is inaugurated; it has all the makings for yet another historic night in this legendary music venue.
In New Orleans, jazz is not just a type of music, but a way of life. No singular artist stands taller or prouder in representing the city's deep musical heritage than Glen David Andrews. He articulates the deep musical heritage of the city of New Orleans while keeping one foot planted in the more contemporary, funky sounds of today's brass bands. The other foot rests firmly on the time-honored tradition of his elders; legends such as Anthony "Tuba Fats" Lacen, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. Aside from being a great musician, Glen David has absorbed a fading tradition, says Ben Jaffe, who runs Preservation Hall, where Andrews did a regular gig on Sunday nights. He's a link for his generation to something important. But he also has a rare enthusiasm and energy that makes it all special and exciting for even casual listeners. Though most contemporary brass-band musicians have embraced the more funk and pop-oriented sound of say, the Rebirth band, a shift that began some 30 years ago, Andrews sticks mostly to the old hymns, spirituals and trad-jazz tunes. In January, Glen will also be starting a weekly Monday night residency, 10:00pm at dba on Frenchmen St in New Orleans with a rotating band of New Orleans finest musicians.
Sharing the bill at Tipitina's will be the Paul Sanchez Rolling Road Show. Two years ago, after sixteen years with the popular New Orleans band Cowboy Mouth, Paul stepped out on his own and hasn't looked back. The Rolling Road Show is a celebration of New Orleans music and fun, with each member of the band singing and playing their own songs as well as Paul's. Since the band is made up of Paul's favorite performers from around the city, it is a real coming together of New Orleans musical community. Paul is a prolific songwriter, and has collaborated with many of Crescent City musicians, in all genres. The title track came to Paul in the middle of the night after a rehearsal at the church. He brought it to Glen David the next day, Glen wrote a third verse, changed some of the melody, and an instant gospel classic was born.
A portion of the proceeds from the evening show will benefit both Sweet Home New Orleans, and the Equity and Inclusion, two very worthy causes in the effort to rebuild the New Orleans music community, the city and the entire gulf coast region. A Raffle and auction will also be conducted for the 2 charities the night of the show.
