BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Children of Promise, NYC) - With support from the famed rapper Queen Pen, the Brooklyn-based non-profit organization, Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC), is set to unite children from the Brooklyn area and their incarcerated fathers this coming Father's Day by sponsoring free trips to surrounding prisons. Of the estimated 85,000 children in New York who have an incarcerated parent, children from Bedford-Stuyvesant and surrounding neighborhoods are disproportionately impacted by this trend. The challenges facing these children are significant, wide-ranging and potentially devastating. In fact, the trauma of losing a parent is often made worse by the social and economic problems connected to their circumstances.

As a vocal advocate for children, Queen Pen is working closely with CPNYC to raise awareness of these issues along with funds for programs like CPNYC's Father's Day Visits. Giving children from Brooklyn the opportunity to join their incarcerated parent on important holidays like Father's Day is a vital part of the process of nurturing the parent/child bond, instilling greater self-esteem and reducing anti-social behavior. To ensure that the experience is both productive and positive, activities are infused with counseling and take place within a safe and trusted environment with other children who share similar experiences. In addition to transportation, children are given food, games for the bus ride and gifts for their fathers.

According to CPNYC Founder and President, Sharon Content, "The support and advocacy of individuals like Queen Pen has the potential to tangibly impact our local communities. Children who have not seen their fathers since their incarceration will be able to celebrate with them on this special day." Content also believes the rewards associated with these trips will "help to encourage these children as they learn to discover better pathways, recognize new possibilities and realize their full potential."
