RECORD OF THE WEEK
Beyonce ft. Jay-Z - Crazy In Love Out This has got to be one of the biggest hits of 2003, championed by most radio stations as one, of the stand-out tunes of the year, with an catchy, infectious R'n'B/Disco sound. The debut single from Destiny's Child diva Beyonce, 'Crazy In Love' is already looking like it has classic urban anthem written all over it. Featuring a stellar hip-hop turn from Jay-Z (returning the favour after Beyonce guested on his '03 Bonnie & Clyde') around an uplifting r'n'b backdrop (and a brilliant Chi-lites sample), it's also a slamming first taster of exactly what you can expect from the lil sista's 'Dangerously In Love' solo set.
HOT SHOT RECORD
S Club 8 - Fool No More Young, gifted and very talented kids, they got what it takes and hoping they can last the pace of this huge teen pop market. This song should do well given time in the next 3 years they will be a force to be reckoned with. Now that S Club 7 has officially disbanded, the S Club Jrs expand their ranks to eight, gather their confidence and set their sights on UK pop domination. And 'Fool No More' is a fine start to their campaign! A sure-fire dancefloor filler, this cool, upbeat, high energy dance track.
50 Cent ft. Nate Dogg - 21 Questions Following his support to Eminem's Anger Management Tour at Milton Keynes, 50 Cent returns with his follow-up single to the enormous hit 'In Da Club'. Having bludgeoned dancefloors worldwide with his mammoth 'In Da Club' single, Eminem protege 50 Cent returns this week with something a little gentler on the senses. A laid-back, silky smooth hip-hop love-in, '21 Questions' not only shows off the tattooed badboy's sensitive side, but also shows exactly what a great rapper the man really is.
Michelle Branch - Are You Happy Now She may have been fairly quiet since she breezed on the music scene last year, but new single 'Are You Happy Now' proves that the immensely talented Michelle Branch hasn't lost her touch when it comes to crafting uplifting rock-tinted pop gems. The first insight into the forthcoming 'Hotel Paper' album, it's another breezy slice of catchy guitar pop, and whets the appetite perfectly for what's already promising to be a very good album indeed.
Delerium - After All Having already gate-crashed trancefloors with their last three releases ('Silence', 'Innocente' and 'Underwater'), Delerium return this week with another euphoric anthem in making in the shape of the truly sublime 'After All'. Featuring another massive female vocal, the sublime original also comes with some absolutely mammoth remixes. Svenson & Gielen deliver a typically uplifting mix along with a riff that could cut glass. Excellent!
The Foundation ft. Natalie Rossi - All Out Of Love An offshoot of the hugely successful NuLife label, Fuelin kicks off its account in fine style this week with first release 'All Out Of Love'. Originally a huge hit for Air Supply way back in 1981, it's been rejuvenated 2003 pop-trance stylee by Dutch producer Foundation and vocalist Natalie Rossi. A must if you're a fan of the likes of N-Trance and DJ Sammy, the original also comes with stellar remixes from the ever-reliable Friday Night Posse and newcomer Sedan.
Lisa Marie Presley - Lights Out Being the daughter of one of the 20th Century's biggest icons was never gonna be easy, but Lisa Marie-Presley seems to have weathered the storm and after a lifetime of press scrutiny emerges from the shadows with a fine debut single that's all her. Revealing a distinctive rock edge amongst the catchy licks and breezy pop feel, 'Lights Out' heralds the arrival of a genuine talent and one, hopefully, that'll be around for plenty of time to come.
Mario - C'mon The second r'n'b-pop gem from US teen sensation Mario, 'C'mon' is looking like the single to catapult this talented young singer right onto the UK's urban radar. Very much like his debut outing - 'Just A Friend' - 'C'mon' is fast becoming another club banger that has 'huge crossover track' written all over it. Whilst both formats feature the brilliant 'Just Blaze Mix' (which cleverly samples James Brown's 'Hot Pants') alongside a typically fine 'Stargate Mix'.
Mis-teeq - Can't Get It Back Having returned to the UK's urban radar with their scorching last single 'Scandalous', Mis-teeq keep the temperature levels soaring with more dancefloor aerobics in the shape of 'Can't Get It Back'. Another lethal cocktail of street sass and attitude washed down by equal measures of pop and r'n'b.
Sinead Quinn - What You Need Is Fame Academy Starlet Sinead is back with her follow-up 'What You Need Is' giving a heavy rocky sound. Sinead Quinn is a strong, self-assured and refreshingly real addition to the UK's current pop scene. Refusing to pander to the usual cover version route to success or fit into a girl-group, she's continuing to forge her own path, and new single 'What You Need Is' is another brilliant step in the right direction. A breezy, confident, upbeat, and effortlessly catchy mix of pop and rock, it's her best yet, and one that shows she's got what it takes to be around for the long haul.
Paul Van Dyk ft. Hemstock & Jennings - Nothing But You The latest addition to Positiva's ever-impressive artist roster, Paul Van Dyk returns to the fray this week with long awaited new single 'Nothing But You'. Featuring a haunting Norwegian vocal (as well as additional vocals from Jan Johnston) around PVD's usual high-quality trance production, the sublime original is also joined. Already massive around Europe, this comeback has summer trance anthem stamped right over it!
