Bobby Clarke, CEO of Irie Jam, is confident the event will attract not only traditional reggae/dancehall lovers but mainstream fans that have now embraced the music.
�Sean Paul and Wayne Wonder are two of the hottest names on the International scene right now� Clarke noted. �A few weeks ago Sean had the number one record in the US, outselling acts like 50 Cent and J Lo. Wayne is enjoying mainstream success with �No Letting Go,� while Cobra, Baby Cham and Tanto Metro & Devonte have all enjoyed crossover success as well. Timing is everything and we have just the right pool of talent to pull a huge crowd,� he said.
Although music lovers stateside have only recently got turned on to Sean Paul, the dancehall recorder boasts an impressive record of achievement. He was the first reggae artist ever to have two songs in regular rotation on urban Hot 97 radio in New York at the same time. He was also the first reggae artist to appear at Hot 97's Summer Jam concert and was the first to chart two songs from the same album at the same time - "Hot Gal Today" & "Deport Them" on Billboard R&B Singles Chart. �Hot Gal� climbed to #6 on Billboard Hot Rap Singles Chart and was featured in the new movie "Shaft."
His current VP/Atlantic album Dutty Rock, was recently certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), while his single �Get Busy� is #1 in Netherlands, #2 in Switzerland, #4 in Belgium and #4 in Denmark. Irie Jam is still negotiating with a number of local acts and a hip-hop star to join the already impressive list of headliners.
�Since it is not a done deal, I am not at liberty to disclose any more information but I can say he is a huge international star who will compliment the headliners,� Clarke said. Other acts confirmed for Irie Jamboree include Richie Stevens, Tony Curtis, Ward 21, Luckie D, Mr. Easy and Soca acts Nya George, Fayann Lyons, Iwer George and the Invasion Band. Irie Jamboree takes place on Sunday, August 24 at the Roy Wilkins Park, Queens, New York.
