Wingate's Kleetu"den Symphony is the culmination of his lifelong obsession with the art of the 20th century Swiss artist Paul Klee (1879-1940). The symphony features 27 movements, each inspired by one of the composer's favorite works by the artist. The symphony's subtitle, Kleetu"den, is a pun on the German word Etu"den ('e'tudes'), and refers to both the great virtuosity required from the orchestra, and the diverse experiments in formal procedure underlying the composition.
Stephen Ellis, a specialist in Klee-inspired music, and the author of a forthcoming book on the subject, has said of Wingate's Kleetu"den Symphony: "The compositional impulses are of the highest order and reach out directly to the listener, who can easily sense... simpatico with Klee, as the sound flows as if being created on the spot." He also adds that out of the more than 700 musical works inspired by that artist, Wingate's symphony offers the most Klee works (27) ever acknowledged in one score.
The main musical theme for Kleetu"den is based on Wingate's inspired use of the letters of Klee's name itself, with the letters' numeric positions in the alphabet generating an 8-note melody via post-tonal pitch-class theory. Each movement then bends and shapes this theme into a different tone painting in homage to a specific artwork by Klee. The new symphony is part of a long history of music inspired by Klee's work, and is in the same vein as Gunther Schuller's Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee (1959), and David Diamond's The World of Paul Klee (1958), but much larger in scope. Composer Mikael Karlsson has called Kleetu"den: "a sweetly schizophrenic Pictures at an Exhibition for an unknown century".
