San Francisco, CA (Top40 Charts/ Retronyms) - Retronyms have teamed up with musicians Eskmo, Exillon, Jneiro Jarel, and Starkey to release Outer Spaces, an EP in which all the tracks used Retronyms' iPhone app DopplerPad in their production. DopplerPad is a synthesizer-based instrument inspired by tools such as the Korg Kaossilator and the Yamaha Tenori-On. It mimics the standard DJ setup of a mixer with turntables on either side, and is complete with over 40 instruments, a gate arpeggiator, loop export via wifi, instrument and effects editors, and Audio Copy and Audio Paste with compatible apps.

"Because we designed DopplerPad to be a tool professional musicians can use, we thought it'd be great to put together a compilation that showcases just what musicians are doing with it," says Retronyms co-founder Zach Saul.

So Retronyms contacted the artists involved, and they agreed to contribute tracks to the project. Some artists chose to use DopplerPad for the majority of the track production, while others used DopplerPad for sketching out ideas and then imported loops to a DAW for further manipulation. For example, Eskmo relied heavily on the sampler while using DopplerPad, and Exillon and Starkey used Logic and other DAWs in addition to DopplerPad to create their Outer Spaces tracks.

Starkey (P.J. Geissinger) says about the experience, "Of the iPhone apps I've had the pleasure of messing around with, DopplerPad is by far one of the most fun and engaging. It took me a few train trips to really wrap my head around it, I must admit. But after I realized that the app was built more around spontaneity and less about midi sequencing, I was creating interesting loops at a feverish pace."

Outer Spaces is the first EP to use an iPhone app as an instrument in every track, and it can now be downloaded free of charge from https://www.dopplerpad.com/outerspaces. Retronyms are also celebrating the Outer Spaces launch with a DopplerPad sale, taking 20% off its original price for a limited time.

Retronyms is a small band of programmers and designers based in San Francisco that write software for the iPhone, Android, Mac, PC and Unix. They try to blur the line between tool and game, creating entertaining tools and games for consumers, especially in the multimedia space. They are very design driven and work hard to create software that looks great and works as smoothly as possible. Their iPhone application Recorder was the only business application to make the top ten list of iPhone apps sold for 2008, and their location-based game Seek 'n Spell won Best Use of Technology at NYC's 2009 Come Out and Play Festival and was a finalist in the 2009 Android Developer Challenge.

Eskmo is San Francisco musician Brendan Angelides whose most recent releases are "Lands and Bones" (feat. Swan) for Warp Records, "Let Them Sing/From The Standpoint" for Planet Mu Records, and "Fine Objects" by Eskamon (a collaboration with Ninja Tune's Amon Tobin).
Exillon also hails from San Francisco and is the electronic music project of Jay Fields. Playing instruments since the age of 12, he has released music on Ad Noiseam, Zod Records, Component Records and Puzzling Records.

Jneiro Jarel's (Dr. Who Dat?) collaborations and producer credits are almost too many to mention. Highlights include works with Khujo Goodie (as Willie Isz), DOOM, TV on the Radio, and many more. Jarel recently released the genre re-defining Android Love Mayhem from his newly-launched Label Who imprint, distributed by Alpha Pup. His new album, Fauna, will be released on Kindred Spirits/Label Who this summer.

Starkey is Philadephian P.J. Geissinger who has released his "street bass" music for his own Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey labels as well as Planet Mu Records. His most recent releases are the singles "Ok Luv" (feat. Badness) and "Stars" (feat. Anneka) and the album Ear Drums and Black Holes.
