New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Capitol Records) -
Sky Ferreira has already created a buzz with the eye-catching viral videos for her songs '17' and 'One' (music that Entertainment Weekly has called 'infectious, surprisingly sophisticated dance-floor electronica'). Now the 18-year-old pop starlet-in-the-making will release her as-yet-untitled debut album in the U.S. on January 11th, 2011 (1/11/11) on Capitol Records. The album is also being set up for release in the UK, where Ferreira has already been featured in NME, Dazed & Confused, The Sunday Times, MusicWeek, and RWD. She also graced the cover of the June issue of French fashion magazine Jalouse.
Ferreira has been in London and Sweden working on her album - a sparkling collection of electronic pop tunes that combine lustrous melodies with spare, digitized beats - with a host of A-list songwriters and producers, including Swedish hitmakers Bloodshy & Avant (whom Ferreira hooked up with after reaching out to them on MySpace when she was 15), Greg Kurstin, Linda Perry, Ryan Tedder, Dallas Austin, Paul Epworth, Teddybears, and Frankmusik.
A voracious music fan, Ferreira cites an eclectic array of influences on her sound, including image-conscious chameleons Madonna, David Bowie, and Britney Spears, French pop sophisticates Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot, as well as raucous all-female groups like the Spice Girls and the Runaways. Lyrically, she follows the age-old storytellers' adage: Write what you know. 'I'm interested in telling stories about youth and desire,' Ferreira says. 'Not love though, because I haven't experienced that yet.' Songs like the first single, 'Obsession,' and '17' are ripe, cleverly crafted coming-of-age tales about growing up fast in the City of Angels.
'Obsession' (written by OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder), will hit radio in late September. The track is currently available as a 'Now What's Next' Bonus Track on the digital version of Now That's What I Call Music, Vol. 35. It will also be featured, alongside tracks by Gorillaz, Bat For Lashes, and Goldfrapp, on the upcoming soundtrack to the CW show The Vampire Diaries, which will be released by Capitol Records on October 12th. The track is also currently available on iTunes.
Ferreira has already built a devoted fanbase through the MySpace page she launched to share her own tracks, like the self-parodying 'Lolita,' the Greg Kurstin-produced 'Femme Fatale,' and an acoustic cover of Miike Snow's 'Animal.' Her burgeoning Internet notoriety led to an invitation to appear in French synth-pop artist Uffie's video for 'Pop the Glock,' as well as a principal role in Matt Porterfield's upcoming indie drama Putty Hill, which has screened at film festivals around the world.
Check out what the press has been saying about Sky Ferreira:
'The electro-pop princess' single 'One' has the makings of the perfect dance jam thanks to sweet vocals and trip-happy beats.' - Entertainment Weekly
'So what makes 17-year-old songstress Sky Ferreira such a special case? Everything, basically. She's a rough-around-the-edges beauty with a sterling voice, impeccably weird taste, and an almost maniacal inability to take no for an answer.' - Interview
"Imagine some of the ska glamour of Gwen Stefani, the party-all-night-looks of Ke$ha, and a dash of Bjork. Got all that? If so, you're probably conjuring up Sky Ferreira." - Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog
