Die Antwoord drop their debut full-length, $0$, on Cherrytree/Interscope, finally unleashing their rave-rap next-level music worldwide. And double that to f-ken f-, because that same date Ninja, Yo-landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek are coming from their South African home up to North spreading their zef-so-fresh across the land.
So far there's been a lot of talk surrounding a viral video released by the band. Reaction is varied - from bemused and bewitched to bewildered. As Ninja says The Guardian: "Is this Die Antwoord f$No @ing terrible, like f-ing retardedly the worst thing ever or the most amazing thing in the entire universe?"
At the handful of live shows the band has played in the U.S., Die Antwoord are the most amazing thing in the entire universe. As Crawdaddy notes: "It was hard to imagine anyone's jaw being able to drop any further towards the floor. Die Antwoord had given themselves to the night, and we were there to take them. See Die Antwoord to believe in them."
Onstage Ninja can go from endearing to menacing, spitting smartly-crazed raps in both Afrikkans and English. Sex kitten doesn't even begin to describe Yo-landi, more like hell kitten, prone to tauntingly slapping her own ass - the one not for you. Then your brain turns upside-down when this teeny bad-ass throws off sounds in the sweetest pitch you've never heard, a voice Mad Decent calls "Afrikaan heliumized Son Doobie."
I don't really know what that means either, but do know Die Antwoord is the most ingenious, exciting thing to come around. Since Ninja hooked up with Yo-landi and DJ Hi-Tek it was immediately "The Answer" ("Die Antwoord" in Afrikkans). And then the video. "Enter the Ninja" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc3f4xU_FfQ) hit the interwebs and suddenly Die Antwoord are internet superstars with so many views their site crashed. After website Boing Boing picked up slack, views went up to 7 million obsessive viewers getting their fix.
