Recorded over three days, with no bass guitar and beer as the main form of sustenance, this young band's offering has achieved the elusive goal of balancing raw, unadulterated chaos in a studio setting. This lean, muscular punk record cements Corpus' reputation for being the only 2-piece that can make you think and make you dance til you throw up. Produced at BJB studios in Surry Hills, this six-track EP contains none of the trappings of the jaded Sydney scene. It ain't a 1980's nostalgia record. It ain't electro-pop. And it ain't no dubstep remix. It's an often contradictory commentary on the state of mankind, told with questionable authority by two white kids from the suburbs. At times self-effacing, at others self-destructive, Man is undeniably potent, vigorous and catchy as hell from start to finish. The mini-album's title track plays as a history lesson, from the conquests and atrocities of ancient civilizations to the phallic symbology of modern missiles penetrating enemy lines. Jack Bruun-Hammond's driving, almost hip-hop drumbeats kick the tale along as the primal wailing of singer/guitarist Keiron Steel smacks you in the chops like a medieval war-club. The relentless catchiness of tracks like Paradise and Silka is fittingly paired with the lyrical exploration of man's base pleasures; of a fascination with all things raunchy and seedy. Even sobering tracks such as Dark Dark see Bruun-Hammonds' and Steel's verses playing like lines in a black comedy, trading cynical stanzas in a kind of Kurt Cobain-meets-Nick Cave bar-room fantasy. Full of edgy, moody guitar lines and throbbing drums, Man sucks you and in doesn't let you go til the last spine-tingling note. This exciting new band is set to claim the mantle from the ashes of the likes of defunct punk bands The Scare and Talons and reinvigorate live music in Sydney with their insanely tight performances and overall kick-ass presence.
