Bieber Fever, Lady Gaga and... John Lennon!

Music dominated the kids' entertainment lists and the biggest standout was international teen singing sensation, Justin Bieber. At number one globally, Bieber took a dominant position in the top searches of every country except for India, China and Japan.

Your old music collection could be more popular with kids than you think. Towering at second place globally, kids around the world experienced a spike of curiosity over John Lennon this past year. Parents may be surprised to learn that John Lennon was a top term in Australia, India, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States. The classic rock icon, who was remembered in 2010 with the 30th anniversary of his death, even beat out Lady Gaga, whose catchy beats and unforgettable antics earned her the number three slot in the global list.

"Dynamite" by Taio Cruz Explodes the Charts

Pop songs comprised 13 out of the top 25 entertainment searches, but the top searched-for song by kids worldwide was actually a little more R&B: the hit track Dynamite by Taio Cruz was a clear favorite. Beyond that, the top 10 singles that kept kids dancing to the same beat in countries around the world were:

  1. Dynamite, by Taio Cruz
  2. Waka Waka, by Shakira
  3. Teenage Dream, by Katy Perry
  4. Love the Way You Lie, by Eminem (featuring Rhianna)
  5. Airplanes, by B.o.B.

  7. We No Speak Americano, by Yolanda Be Cool ("Panamericano" was also a top search term, and refers to this song)
  8. Nein Mann, by Laserkraft 3D (a top track in Germany)
  9. Like A G6, by Far East Movement
  10. Written in the Stars, by Tinie Tempha (featuring Eric Turner)

When Kids Aren't Listening To Music, They're Watching TV

Music may have been the biggest entertainment driver for kids on the Internet, but TV wasn't too far behind. The musically oriented and competitive reality shows American Idol and X-Factor were the two top shows for kids on the Internet. Following not far behind, and maybe also for its interactive online games, Ben 10 was a strong contender, especially for kids in Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Parents Should Keep the Dialogue Going

"Sometimes parents have blind spots about their kids' rapidly evolving likes and interests, especially when it comes to how their kids spend time on the Internet," said Marian Merritt, Norton Internet Safety Advocate and Chair of the Norton Online Family Advisory Council. "A free solution like Norton Online Family is a great tool to help parents continue a healthy dialogue with their kids about not only their favorite sources of entertainment, but also what constitutes safe behavior online."

Methodology

Between August 01, 2010 and Dec. 1, 2010, Norton tracked a total of 23.3 million searches that were submitted by a sample of users of their Norton Online Family service in 20 selected countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
