SAN FRANCISCO, CA. (Top40 Charts/ San Francisco Parlor Opera) San Francisco Parlor Opera's production of Jacques Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann opens May 19, 2011.
Director Cole Grissom's compelling and provocative vision follows
Hoffmann on his fantastical journey of love and obsession via the recesses of Hoffman's mind. It is here where we encounter the many manifestations of himself and his lover. Guided by his inner voices of virtue and vice he emerges from the tale a changed and broken man.
Experience it in the intimate setting that only SF Parlor Opera can offer.
San Francisco Parlor Opera is a small opera company based in San Francisco that performs operas in their original language to small audiences in private homes and other intimate settings. SF Parlor Opera was founded by Bay Area singers Cole Grissom, Elizabeth O'Neill and Patricia Urbano, who also serve as Artistic Directors of the Company. In its short lifespan of three years and six productions, SF Parlor Opera has sold out performance after performance and been celebrated by critics, audience members and industry insiders alike:
"But for all the easygoing bonhomie on display, Saturday night's performance demonstrated that Parlor Opera takes its projects perfectly seriously. Aside from a few discreet nips and tucks in the overture, 'Don Giovanni' was done complete, in the original Italian... and the singing was often splendid, especially from soprano Patricia Soria Urbano (one of the company's co-directors) as an alert, dramatically vivid Donna Elvira..."
Joshua Kosman
San Francisco Chronicle
"You have created something magical and incredibly effective with very few resources. The experience of interacting with opera when you are just feet from the singers is very different from what happens in a large opera house, and you create a connection with the audience that is powerful and very moving."
Matthew Shilvock
Assistant General Director of San Francisco Opera
