NEW YORK (MTV) - The action-adventure comedy "Pirates of the Caribbean: The
Curse of the
Black Pearl" hooked six MTV Movie Award nominations Wednesday, including nods for Best Movie and Best Male Performance for Johnny Depp.
The 2003 summer blockbuster also earned nominations for Best Comedic Performance by Depp, Best On-Screen Team for Depp and Orlando Bloom, Breakthrough Female for Keira Knightley and Best Villain for Geoffrey Rush.
Taking on "Pirates" for Best Movie honors are "Finding Nemo," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," "X2: X-Men United" and "50 First Dates."
"X2: X-Men United" and "50 First Dates" tied for second in nominations with four each.
Depp, who won a SAG award and an Oscar nomination for his role in the film, will face Adam Sandler ("50 First Dates"), Bill Murray ("Lost in Translation") and Tom Cruise ("The Last Samurai") for Best Male Performance honors. The surprise nomination for the normally loose awards show was Jim Caviezel, who got the nod for playing Jesus in Mel Gibson's biblical epic "The Passion of The Christ."
Charlize Theron, who won this year's Best Actress Oscar for "Monster," was nominated for Best Female Performance. She'll take on Drew Barrymore ("50 First Dates"), Halle Berry ("Gothika"), Queen Latifah ("Bringing Down the House") and Uma Thurman ("Kill Bill Volume 1).
In the Best Comedy Performer race, Depp will take on Will Ferrell ("Elf"), Ellen DeGeneres ("Finding Nemo"), Jim Carrey ("Bruce Almighty") and Jack Black ("School of Rock").
The irreverent awards show will also again feature such categories as Best Action Sequence, Best Fight, Best Kiss and Best Dance Sequence.
The awards will be handed out June 5 in Los Angeles and taped for Broadcast June 10.
