NEW YORK (NY RnB Magazine) - Music channel VH1 are launching a new hip-hop awards show called "VH1 Hip-Hop Honors" scheduled for October 8. The channel have not been connected largely to the hip-hop culture throughout the channel's history, but network president Christina Norman believes VH1 is prefect for an awards show like this. "The people who grew up listening to the Sugar Hill Gang and Run-DMC," Norman told to press, "those are our viewers. "VH1 Hip-Hop Honors" will be an annual ceremony that will be a mix of veteran as well as current hip-hop artists. Unlike other hip-hop awards shows, "Honors" gives veteran artists, who haven't been recognized in the past, their chance to shine.
The first rap Grammy was not awarded until 1989, and rappers before this will now get the chance to be recognized for their skills. The awards will air along with a five-part documentary on the history of Hip-Hop.
