Produced by John Hill (Santigold, M.I.A.) with co-production from Portugal. The Man lead singer/guitarist/songwriter John Gourley and longtime band producer Casey Bates, and mixed by Grammy Award winner Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Jeff Buckley), "IN THE MOUNTAIN IN THE CLOUD" marks the first recording to truly harness the Portland, Oregon-based band's exhilarating live show. From the dynamic opener "So American" to the sprawling vision of "Sleep Forever," the album - Portugal. The Man's sixth overall - captures a truly distinctive band evolving in real time, revealing their singular sonic vision in its purest and most powerful form thus far.
Among the many highlights included on "IN THE MOUNTAIN IN THE CLOUD" is the first single, "Got It All (This Can't Be Living Now)." The track is impacting now at alternative rock radio outlets nationwide, while its official video premiered yesterday at Mashable.com.
"IN THE MOUNTAIN IN THE CLOUD" has already garnered critical praise from an array of national publications and online outlets. "One of the year's best rock efforts," declared MTV.com, "brimming with angst, atmosphere, and angular, indie-leaning guitars... You'll be reading much more about them in the months to come." "The Alaska foursome (who now live in Portland, Ore.) retains much of its established tendencies here," noted Relix, "soaring psychedelic melodies; frontman John Gourley's soulful, soprano vocals; and the underlying sense that you are witnessing a spontaneous fusion of psych-rock with woodsy indie folk." "Seamless and innovative," decreed Paste, adding that Portugal. The Man "break musical boundaries with every release." Jason Bentley, Music Director and host of KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" declared: "... In The Mountain In The Cloud is an expertly crafted collection of songs that draws on the joy, sadness, and complexity of life as its creative palette to represent the spirit of our time. A bold task to take on the vastness of human experience, but this record has a switched-on consciousness that makes it a rare find. As a singular achievement, In The Mountain In The Cloud is simply one of the best records of the year."
What's more, Paste recently named Portugal. The Man's performance atop a Mr. T. Mardi Gras float as their No 1 "Favorite Moment" from this year's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. The surprise 3AM set followed a New Orleans-style second line parade through the festival grounds led by members of My Morning Jacket and the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Since their formation in 2005, Portugal. The Man has captured the attention of the American indie scene with their extraordinary amalgamation of electronic beats, complex melodies, and atmospheric post-rock soundscapes. Formed in Wasilla, Alaska by lead singer/guitarist/songwriter John Gourley before migrating south to the Pacific Northwest, the band proved as prolific as they were eclectic, releasing an album each year since their 2006 debut, "WAITER: 'YOU VULTURES!'"
Each consecutive collection revealed the ongoing evolution of Portugal. The Man, from the cathartic hard rock of 2007's "CHURCH MOUTH" and the theatrical pop psychedelia of 2008's "CENSORED COLORS" to the sci-fi chamber-pop found on 2009's "THE SATANIC SATANIST" and 2010's "AMERICAN GHETTO."
Portugal. The Man has also proven an inexhaustible live act, performing more than 800 shows over the course of their 6-year history. Moreover, the band has stolen the show at a variety of major festivals, including Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Lollapalooza, and the Sasquatch! Music Festival. Their performance at 2010's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival was singled out by a range of publications, including the Wall Street Journal, which placed PTM's set among the festival's "most satisfying moments... Already a fine, adventurous band, Portugal. The Man has upped its game through tighter musical and vocal arrangements."
Portugal. The Man is John Gourley: vocals, guitar; Zachary Scott Carothers: bass, vocals; Jason Sechrist: drums; Ryan Neighbors: keys, vocals.
