Despite the unfortunate cancellation of this years Afro-punk Festival because of Hurricane Irene, Afro-Punks amazing sponsors Nike, Boost Mobile, Harley Davidson, and Sesachave stuck with Afro-Punk to make this showcase happen. Afro-punk is also partnering withRed Bull for the first time on this event.
The NY Times has declared
Detroit power trio Death punk before there was punk. The pioneers with a DIY spirit first came together in the mid 70s and their no holds barred sound has been paving the ay for others ever since. Cerebral Ballzy were born and raised in East New Yorks grimy core but instead of crying about it, they scream their way through a sprawling mess of 80s-hardcore and punk rock on their self-titled release. Ninjasoniks music speaks for itself and while not defined to one genre it has the ability to perhaps be just punk, just hip-hop and just pop. Newark, New Jerseys own Jersey Klan infuse Brick City hip hop with a fearless creativity and vision. The incomparable Stack-Aly selects like no other and will be djing in-between bands.
Described by the New York Timesas putting rock and rebellion squarely in the category of African-American music, Afro-punk live events have become an institution. Over the past seven years Bad Brains, Mos Def, Santigold, The Noisettes, Janelle Monae, Saul Williams, Afirka Bambaataa, The Dirtbombs, and Dallas Austinhave also graced Afro-punks stages.
THE STORY OF DEATH
So youve heard of the
Detroit band called DEATH that was formed in the 1970s? Maybe youve read the New York Times article , or have read reviews in Rolling Stone, Spin Magazine,
National Public Radio, The BBC,
Melody Magazine and Dazed And Confused , The
Chicago Tribune, The
Detroit News and
Detroit Free Press, Fader Magazine, or even the
Howard Stern Show and you feel that you know the story. Maybe you have heard the great and legendary release of the tracks recorded at Detroit's United
Sounds Recording Studio in 1974/1975 released in 2009 by Drag City Records entitled "FOR THE WHOLE WORLD TO SEE". Although all of the above is true and well written regarding the Deathstory, the half is still yet to be told. All we can tell you is that Death is a strange and wonderful story and all of it has to do with Rock-N-Roll.
