DAYTON, OH. (Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra) - The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra (DPO), under the direction of Neal Gittleman, will release its second CD entitled "A Celebration of Flight" on June 29, 2004. Created in part to commemorate the centennial of flight, all works featured on the disc are original commissions.

The disc features:
- William Bolcom's "Inventing Flight"
- Steven Winteregg's "To Fly Unbounded"
- Michael Schelle's "Wright Flight"
- Robert Xavier Rodriguez's "Flight: The Story of Wilbur and Orville Wright"

All works were performed during the Orchestra's 2002-2003 concert season. Each commission was given its world premiere in Dayton with the exception of the Bolcom commission which the DPO shared with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra (Raleigh, North Carolina). William Bolcom's "Inventing Flight" received its world premiere on April 10, 2003 at Chapel Hill Bible Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Steven Winteregg's "To Fly Unbounded" was premiered on January 23 and 25, 2003 at Memorial Hall. Michael Schelle's "Wright Flight" was premiered on February 14 and 15, 2003 at the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center and Robert Xavier Rodriguez's "Flight: The Story of Wilbur and Orville Wright" was premiered on April 25 and 26, 2003 at the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center.

Allison Janney, Emmy award winning actress of the NBC series "The West Wing" serves as narrator on Robert Xavier Rodriguez's "Flight: The Story of Wilbur and Orville Wright." Award-winning pianist Andrew Russo performs on Michael Schelle's "Wright Flight"; Dayton Philharmonic cellist Mary Davis Fetherston performs in solo on William Bolcom's "Inventing Flight"; and soprano Mary Elizabeth Southworth performs on Steven Winteregg's "To Fly Unbounded" as does the Dayton Philharmonic Chorus, under the direction of Hank Dahlman.

This project took the Orchestra several years of planning and preparation in advance of the centennial of flight. The actual recording of the disc occurred in May 2003 at the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center in downtown Dayton. This disc is being released on the Albany records label.
The disc may be purchased by visiting https://www.albanyrecords.com, https://www.amazon.com or by calling the DPO offices at 937-224-3521.
