ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (Beatles Fans Website) -Paul McCartney put on a concert in Russia's second largest city of St. Petersburg over the weekend as part of his summer tour. Beatlemania was in full swing in the city of St. Petersburg late Sunday, as Paul McCartney appeared in concert for only the second time in Russia. McCartney was playing his 3,000th gig and his first concert in the Russian city in front of an estimated 50,000 people in St. Petersburg's Palace Square. The concert got off to a late start, in part due to tight security at the event. Last year, McCartney performed in Russia for the first time at Moscow's Red Square. He delighted a crowd of 20,000 with a rousing rendition of the Beatles hit Back in the USSR. The Beatles were officially banned by the former Soviet authorities, who declared their music a corrupting influence of the West. McCartney celebrated his 62nd birthday on Friday, and President Putin telephoned him to offer congratulations.
