New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Girlie Action Media & Marketing) Swedish born, New Orleans based soul singer Theresa Andersson has just released her first music video from her new album, Street Parade, for the track "Hold On To Me."
Directed by
Petter Ringbom and shot during Mardi Gras, the video features the Scandinavia soul singer riding in the parade atop a giant bird float designed by sculptor Jacques Dufforc and renowned puppeteer Arthur Mintz, the mastermind behind the award-winning filmFantastic Mr. Fox. She debuted both the album and the float surrounded by a 40-piece band of singers, drummers and horn players as part of the all-female Krewe Of Muses in this year's Mardi Gras parade. Among the many dazzled spectators, Mardi Gras legend Blaine Kernwas most impressed with the spectacle. Kern, who called Theresa's performance "the most original thing I've seen in a long time," has designed floats for the parade since 1947 and has earned the honorary title of "Mister Mardi Gras". " …her range and strength are that of a soul belter's, though her tone comes closer to the ingenues of classic pop like
Feist and Lykke Li." - Los Angeles Times, Ann Powers
"…she draws from many muses at once, and the result sounds like a one-woman wonder." - NPR, Song Of The Day
Street
Parade is a lush, joyful and sometimes melancholy ode to they city she has called "home" for nearly 20 years. A stunning vocalist and a talented multi-instrumentalist, Theresa is best known for her live shows, where she crafts complexly layered songs using bevy of drums, stringed instruments and looping pedals. Theresa will kick off a national US tour making stops in NYC, LA, the NOLA French Quarter Festival and several Jazz Fest appearances. KCRW recently premiered album track "Hold On To Me" as "Today's Top Tune" and will feature Andersson LIVE June 6th on "Morning Becomes Eclectic."
Street
Parade reflects a dreamy Nordic pop sensibility firmly rooted and influenced by the warm gospel and soul sounds that drew the artist to New Orleans in the first place. The title track, "Street Parade," opens the record with resounding vocals rising over a regimental drum-line, testifying to the catharsis and impermanence of the carnival. The focus then draws back cinematically into the rush of the parade as the piano fades on "Injuns," and Theresa's voice bounds over a heart-quickening percussion of handclaps, drumsticks and thrumming base. Theresa's voice plays from a tongue-in-cheek 60s standard to a subtle snarl on the nocturnal brass breakdown of "Fiya's Gone." "What Comes Next" opens with a bright horn melody and mighty drum cadence leading into a powerful chorus on which Theresa is joined by
Peter Moren of
Peter Bjorn and John.
Andersson became an
Internet phenomenon in 2008, when Youtube featured a home-made video of her performing a song in her kitchen. The song, "Na Na Na," from her albumHummingbird, Go!, logged 750,000 views in three days, and has gone on to accumulate nearly 1.5 million views on YouTube. Be sure to catch Theresa Andersson live on tour this spring!
