BitTorrent to Launch New Initiative Aimed at Generating Revenue for Creators and Publishers
San Francisco (Top40 Charts/ BitTorrent) Today BitTorrent, Fame House, and DJ Shadow are launching a BitTorrent Bundle that has the potential to monetize the entire torrent ecosystem. Not only does the Bundle contain exclusive content and tracks from DJ Shadow's Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era (1992-1996); this is also the first BitTorrent Bundle to feature a free software offer from one of BitTorrent's advertising partners. Every time a user chooses to accept the software offer, the artist will get a share of the revenue earned.

DJ Shadow and his digital marketing team Fame House partnered with BitTorrent on this project to bring the musician's work to the 150 million monthly active users of BitTorrent and uTorrent. The BitTorrent Bundle they created contains exclusive content from and inspired by DJ Shadow's Hidden Transmissions; a celebration of the vintage years which made DJ Shadow world-famous. While the content from Shadow is a nod to the past, the business model behind it is a glimpse into a new future for the content industries: a potentially sustainable way for all artists to monetize BitTorrent.

"We've had a lot of success in the last few years putting great content in front of our audiences," said Eric Klinker, chief executive officer for BitTorrent. "Our featured content experiments with musicians, filmmakers, game developers and authors have resulted in tens of millions of downloads, not to mention record deals, sold-out movie theaters, world tours and all kinds of ancillary revenue generated for the creators we've partnered with. But that's no longer enough. We believe we can make digital distribution even more viable for creators and fans. So, beginning now, we'll be testing new ways to drive profitability for creators while delivering even more meaningful media experiences for our users."

Inside the Bundle, users will be presented an opportunity to download a relevant free piece of software from one of BitTorrent's advertising partners, such as a media player. Every time a user downloads this free software, BitTorrent is paid by the advertising partner, and will pass on a portion of that revenue directly to DJ Shadow. The hope is that this experiment will pave the way for a new sustainable digital revenue stream for content producers, allowing them to monetize the BitTorrent ecosystem in ways that make sense for them and their fans.

"Our core business is creating the best torrent products in the world," said Klinker. "While we will always have advertising and offer-free products in market such as BitTorrent Plus, we've seen how relevant and meaningful good content offers are to our users, and how supportive the BitTorrent community is of the content creators we work with. New business models built on top of the BitTorrent ecosystem are the future of content. This is where fans are. It's time to bring artists, filmmakers and game developers into that conversation in meaningful ways too."

The DJ Shadow Bundle is the first of a number of new content experiments the company be testing in-client, on its websites and other media properties in the next few months. For more information about these partnerships and the DJ Shadow BitTorrent Bundle go to www.bittorrent.com.
