One Direction is made up of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne,
Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. All of the group members hail from the U.K., except for Horan, who is from Ireland. In just two short years, the band has taken the world by storm.
The band, who recently played at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, made history as the first British group to top the Billboard 200 with a debut album, "
Up All Night", which also became 2011's fastest-selling UK debut album. The album's lead single, "
What Makes You Beautiful", debuted at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 this spring. In addition, the pop stars have captivated American audiences on multiple television appearances this year, from the 10,000 screaming fans who showed up for NBC's Today Show concert on March 12th to the millions who caught their "Saturday Night Live" gig on April 7, 2012.
One Direction also took home Best New Artist, Best Pop Video and Best Share-Worthy Video for "What Makes Your Beautiful" at the MTV 2012 VMAs, where the band also performed live. The group has also been nominated for a VH1 "Do Something" Award in the "Music Artist" category, after they donated a recipe to The Dish For a Wish Cookbook to raise money for Rays of Sunshine, a charity that makes wishes come true for terminally and seriously ill children.
The band's new single, "
Live While We're Young", serves as the lead track from their upcoming second album, "
Take Me Home", complete with a music video for the lead song. But there's more. Bluewater Productions also just announced the arrival of "Fame: One Direction," a comic-book account of the group's ascent from the English "X Factor" to the Olympics' closing ceremony (where it performed "
What Makes You Beautiful" aboard a moving big rig). The book is the latest edition in the publisher's continuing "Fame" series, which has also featured Justin Bieber,
Selena Gomez and Big Time Rush.
"Comic books and e-books are increasingly being utilized by schools and libraries as tools to encourage youth to read," Bluewater President Darren G. Davis said in a statement. "Kids that are resistant to reading, as I once was, may be more likely to read a comic book featuring their favorite band."
"Fame: One Direction" is available digitally for the Nook, the Kindle and the iPad and in physical form from the Comic Flea Market. As for "
Take Me Home", it's scheduled for release in the United States on Nov. 13, a mere nine months after One Direction's hit debut album, "
Up All Night", which has sold over five million copies. What with the songs, publishing, discs, DVDs, merchandising and endorsements - it is estimated that the five members of the group together have earned nearly £100million.
Recently the band also signed a deal with Pepsi believed to be worth millions, but they have also endorsed dolls, books, calendars and other items. Plus, their huge world tour next year should increase their earnings even more.
