Los Angeles, CA (Top40 Charts/ CineMedia Promotions) Lakeshore Records will release Won't Back Down - Original Motion Picture
Soundtrack digitally on October 2, 2012. The soundtrack features original music composed by Marcelo Zarvos (The Words, The Good Shepherd).
"It is a classic story of everyday people fighting the system anchored by amazing performances and a very balanced and realistic view of contemporary America," described Zarvos. "The main theme consists of a four note fast string melody, that is stretched, transposed and slowed down at times to create multiple layers and soaring lines."
Brazilian-born Marcelo Zarvos burst onto the independent film landscape in the early 2000s with his scores featured in films such as Kissing
Jessica Stein and The Door in the Floor. His trademark is a seamless blend of classical, orchestral, rock, electronic and various ethnic and folk elements, which together create a uniquely affecting and emotionally charged music. Zarvos, who earned his BFA from Cal Arts was named one of the 25 New Faces of Indie Film in 2004 by FilmMaker Magazine.
Zarvos began studying classical music in his teens and later delved into jazz. In addition to his film work, Zarvos released three critically acclaimed albums for MA Recordings: Dualism,
Music Journal and Labyrinths, which mix various world music styles with modern classical and jazz instruments. Likewise, his film scores incorporate these musical elements.
His film credits include: The Good Shepherd, Brooklyn's Finest, Sin Nombre, Remember Me, The Door in the Floor and Hollywoodland. Zarvos has been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards (for You Don't Know Jack and Taking Chance) and an HMMA Award for Brooklyn's Finest. His television work includes the hit HBO series The Big C. Zarvos' recent and upcoming film scores include Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal's The Words, Barry Levinson's The Bay, and
David Mamet's Phil Spector.
For Won't Back Down, "we used some of the electronics, most notable the guitar pulse in the opening, to reflect the grittiness of the Pittsburgh neighborhood where the story takes place, and the low bass synth to reflect menace," said Zarvos. "Another strong element was the idea of a musical ticking clock on the strings and piano reflecting the main character's race to provide a better education and future for their children."
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis play two determined mothers, one a teacher, who will stop at nothing to transform their children's failing inner city school. Facing a powerful and entrenched bureaucracy, they risk everything to make a difference in the education and future of their children.
