New York, NY (Top40 Charts) It's a warm evening at a First Friday's event, and Mwalim has just come off the stage from a small preview performance in promotion of his November 2nd show in New Bedford. Letting the DJ slip the track for "Just Is..." into a mix of 80's dance music, the crowd of grown and sexy, 30 - 60 year- olds slowly realize that they're being treated to a live performance, and they are riveted. A master of the subtle crowd- attention grab, Mwalim sells a bunch of CD as he leaves the stage.
A 27 year veteran of the music business, and major label deal escapee, Mwalim's independently released recordings have been the staple of his catalogs and while download and direct order sales have been picking up, sales at his shows have been foundation of an impressive career. "I've never made a killing, but I've always made a living." Is the mantra of this soul-funk-jazz artist and 2012 New England Urban Music Awards winner.
His latest CD, "DEEP Soul Chants & Hollers" is a soul-funk-jazz treatment of the classic garage/ house music sound. With this recording, Mwalim is enjoying a very mixed and broad international audience of house, dance and soul music enthusiasts. As artists like Adele, Noel Gourdin and Syleena Johnson can attest, there is a strong audience for real music and real artists, something that Mwalim DaPhunkeeProfessor is enjoying on a regional and growing national and international level.
As a music industry chases the spending power of youth, small labels and independent artists are discovering the gold mine in the 30 to 50- something market. The market has proven that the teenagers of the 1980's and 1990's remain a viable market for new music sales. Contrary to industry beliefs, the grown and sexy crowd still enjoys and night out, still drive cars with CD players, still like to dance and still buy and listen to music.
