New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Nolwenn Leroy will make her American debut on Decca Records on January 8, 2013. 'Nolwenn' is an eclectic collection of iconic standards and Celtic traditional songs that highlight Leroy's "sincere and meticulous" (L'Express) vocals which "could revive the Celtic flame...in each of us" (Le Parisien).
Recorded as a tribute to Leroy's Breton roots, classics like "Scarborough Fair," "Amazing Grace," and "Greensleeves," are handled with her characteristic delicacy and mystical bent and inspired by her love of Tori Amos and Kate Bush. "I wanted to make this album as a tribute to all the great songs and artists I listened to when I was a child," Leroy says.
Folk favorites like "Whiskey in the Jar" (famously covered by Thin Lizzy and Metallica) and "Dirty Old Town" (made popular by The Dubliners and The Pogues) and English composer Mike Oldfield's European hit "Moonlight Shadow" are re-imagined with effervescence.
A violinist who studied opera at the Vichy music conservatory, Leroy rose to fame after winning the French reality show,Star Academy, and has since recorded four studio albums in Europe, releasing two number one singles on the French charts. Her album 'Nolwenn' (released under the title 'Bretonne' in France) quickly became a multi-platinum record, remaining at number one on the French charts for seven weeks and selling over 1.2 million copies worldwide.
