Writers In Treatment And The Los Angeles Poverty Department Are Takin' It To The Streets With The Reel Recovery Film Festival-Skid Row Edition, May 3-5
Los Angeles, CA (Top40 Charts/ Writers In Treatment) Writers In Treatment, the acclaimed nonprofit that saves lives through promoting and providing treatment as the best first step solution for addiction, alcoholism and other self-destructive behaviors, is partnering with the Los Angeles Poverty Department to present the REEL Recovery Film Festival—Skid Row Edition on May 3, 4, and 5 at the Inner City Arts Theater. The Inner City Arts Theater is located at 720 Kohler St., Los Angeles, CA 90021.

The Festival will feature three days of recovery-themed performances, films, discussions and fellowship, including free film screenings each day at 1:00, 3:00, and 5:00pm. The films include both Hollywood stunners (such as "Flight," starring Denzel Washington, and "Half Nelson," starring Ryan Gosling) and compelling documentaries (such as "Lost Angeles: Skid Row Is My Home;" the 1956 classic "On the Bowery;" and "Bill W.," a new documentary that uses never-before-seen footage and photographs to reveal the untold story of Alcoholics Anonymous founder Bill Wilson). A complete schedule can be found at https://www.reelrecoveryfilmfestival.org.

"I couldn't be more delighted to partner with the Los Angeles Poverty Department to bring this film festival to Skid Row," says Leonard Buschel, founder of Writers In Treatment and the REEL Recovery Film Festival. "The recovery community here is an amazing, thriving group of people, and it's so exciting to offer this unique mix of film and theater—all for free—in such a dynamic environment."

At 7:00 each evening, festival-goers will enjoy a free performance of the play, "The Biggest Recovery Community Anywhere," created and performed by members of the theater group comprising people who live and work on Skid Row. The performance documents the development of Skid Row as a site of recovery and transformation. It highlights not only the considerable concentration of professional resources and programs in the neighborhood but also the 80+ weekly recovery meetings organized by community residents. Getting clean and sober happens in funded programs, but recovery happens in the community.

Writers In Treatment has produced previous editions of the REEL Recovery Film Festival in New York, Los Angeles, Ft. Lauderdale and Vancouver. Sponsors of the REEL Recovery Film Festival have included KPFK Radio; Hazelden; New Directions for Women; The Refuge Foundation, Inc.; and The Caron Treatment Centers.
