New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Western Publicity) Vegan meat, electronic cigarettes, silicone implants -- it's hard to find anything real these days. I Can Lick Any SOB in the House is back in the fight, using rock n' roll to battle dark forces of chaos and calamity, falsehood and hypocrisy in equal measure. Singer Mike Damron explains, "There's no mercy in religion. And as much as this country professes to be the global superpower, the greatest country on Earth, in reality
America has become the slave of the NRA, our corrupt financial industry, and is governed by a system that was created in a completely different time and culture."
These are bad days. But there is hope. Michael Dean Damron doesn't expect to win; he's just unable to give up, like an old man perched on a cliff, staring up at the wall of water, howling into the abyss. Mike is not a guy you want to tick off, and on Mayberry, he's in his ticked-off prime.
There's been no shortage of fury or despair on past SOB records but guitars sparkle, harmonica wails and the drums wallop on Mayberry like never before. The title track-- a paen to an imagined past-- is hardly uplifting. He's hopelessly outnumbered, by cowardly absent fathers, by a church built on fear, by a culture of violence that views war not just as an economic necessity but as a pastime. His compatriots in the band, Handsome Jon Burbank (guitar), Mole Harris (bass), Flapjack,
Texas (drums) and
David Lipkind (harmonica) lay down a wall of southern rock-soaked sound that is more punk than 99% of the punk bands out there. The band began in 2001, and built a reputation as a fearsome live band with songs that called out everyone from the Westboro Baptist Church to Ted Nugent and Charlton Heston. I Can Lick Any SOB in the House borrowed their name from bare-knuckle legend John L Sullivan's biography (Damron is a former boxer) and their albums stand with the best of bands like Lucero and Drive By Truckers.
I Can Lick Any SOB in the House isn't a pretty band. Mike D. isn't a hero and he's far from a perfect man. But this is the record and the band and the man you need for the hard times we're in.
