New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Greg Reed has released his new EP album, titled, "Spruce Goose," to widespread fan and critical acclaim. The record is comprised of five original tracks for an approximate total of 21 minutes' worth of listening time. It is an independent record in every sense of the word, coming from Reed himself and being in essence the remarkable art of a singer-songwriter who does not easily fit into any particular pigeonhole or subgenre.
Reed's voice is unadorned and unassuming, his performance exact while retaining an off-the-cuff feel. His songs are clean, tight, and contain a varied mixture of tones and movements. A connoisseur of precision songwriting, Reed names among his main influences Sufjan Stevens, Paul Simon, Andrew Bird, and Mozart.
The result is difficult to describe in terms of comparisons, "Spruce Goose" being the work of a musical individualist. It does share many of the mellower attributes of Mike Watt's Firehose project, however, particularly in terms of vocal timber, compositional creativity and general production. The record's closing track, "Faith of the Sun," exhibits these qualities extremely well, and particularly in Reed's vibrant bass lines. Also like the music of Firehose, his lyrics are highly poetic and worth more than mere rhyme and meter. The song "
Bulletproof" stands as an excellent example of this.
Reed, himself, hails from Chicago, but has been playing music in Seoul, South Korea, for two years. The "Spruce Goose" EP, in fact, was recorded at Sound Lab in Jeongja, Bundang. In addition to his rich, natural vocals, the guitar and violin work on his record is also his own. He has played music in
Chicago since 2005, where he performed in indie, rock, blues, and folk bands. 2008 saw the release of his own album, "Folklore Troubadour," to be followed by "Lightbulb Laserbeam" in 2011 (both available for sampling and purchase online).
"Spruce Goose" by Greg Reed is available online worldwide beginning 9 May 2013.
