September 8th, they will hold another concert, this time in association with China's most promising young flamenco guitar performer Kerman.
Vahagni, originally Vahagn Turgutyan, was born in Yerevan, Armenia in 1985. Brought up by a family of artists, Vahagni began playing the guitar at the age of nine under the instruction of his father. After several years of studies, Vahagni went to Andalusia, Spain, to study from the world famous flamenco guitarist Paco Serrano. Today, Vahagni is the guitar soloist for Pacific Coast Philharmonic Orchestra. Aside from performing, Vahagni also writes a column for Fingerstyle 360 entitled Flamenco-ology and is currently a teaching assistant for the guitar department at California
Institute of the Arts where he received his MFA.
As one of the newest voice in instrument music, Vahagni has been bending the genres of flamencon, jazz and world music to create a unique style of his own. His new album, "
Solitude" released last year, was nominated at the 55th Grammy Awards in World
Music Group category.
For his first trip to China, Vahagni and his band will hold performances in both Beijing and Shanghai. He will perform a lot of songs, including "Ancient Water" from "
Solitude", which is inspired by the water sprinkling festival to worship the "life, love and water" goddess Astghik in Armenia, the ancient song "Vaxarshapati par" found by KOMITAS, an Armenia musicologist, and the flamenco music fused with other genres and improvisations.
