Durham, NC (Top40 Charts/ Durham Performing Arts Center) DPAC, Durham Performing Arts Center, WTVD ABC11, PlayMakers Repertory Company and Theatre In The Park are thrilled to announce the 2014 Triangle Rising Star Awards. The Triangle Rising Star Awards is an education initiative to celebrate high school theater students who participate and excel with wide -ranging talents in their musical productions.
This year, the Triangle Rising Star Awards will select Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Production and Best Chorus Ensemble recipients through a multi-step adjudication process from participating high schools' musicals in the 2013/2014 season. For consideration, Teachers must first submit an Intent to Participate Form, found at DPACnc.com/TRS, by April 14 or two weeks prior to their production.
Judges will attend the various high schools' musical theater productions. The top submissions will be selected and invited back on May 31-June 1 to a closed audition and rehearsal process at PlayMakers Repertory Company. The following evening on June 2, there will be a ticketed event at DPAC where all finalists will perform in a showcase and awards will be announced. The top two Triangle students, recipients of the Best Actor and Best Actress awards, will receive an all-expense paid trip to New York to participate in master classes and private coaching from theatre professionals leading to an opportunity to compete in the
National High School Musical Theater Awards at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre June 30, 2014. Recipients will also receive a $1,000 educational scholarship and have the opportunity to be seen by casting agents, meet and converse with Broadway actors, and compete for additional scholarships and other prizes on a national stage.

The Triangle Rising Star Awards are held in conjunction with the
National High School Musical Theater Awards, a national celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater. Established by Nederlander Alliances and Pittsburgh CLO, the program recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performance, as well as honors teachers and their schools' commitment to excellence in performing arts education.

Tickets for the Triangle Rising Stars Showcase Event and Awards Show at DPAC go on sale March 22, 2014 at 10am online at DPACnc.com, Ticketmaster.com and at the DPAC Ticket Office.

WHO: A select number of student finalists will be chosen from Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Orange, Person, Vance, Wake and Warren Counties to audition on May 31. Each student will sing one song from the lead role they played in their school's musical.

The fourth annual
National High School Musical Theater Awards will be held on June 30, 2014 at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway. The show will feature the presentation of the Jimmy Award™ for Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor. Rehearsals, master classes and private coaching sessions for all participants will take place from June 25- July 1. Students are to be apprised that, if they win, they are required to travel to New York City to participate in the event that includes private coaching, auditions, interviews, and rehearsals in preparation for participation in the Jimmy Awards™ show.
