Founded in 1987 by 22-year-old New York DJ (and now Atlantic Chairman and CEO)
Craig Kallman, Big Beat Records presciently melded the diverse sounds of dance club culture with the city's all-encompassing hip hop scene. Over the past 2-3 years the label has since reemerged at the forefront of the hugely popular Electronic Dance
Music movement, presenting a stunning range of international artists and producers of all shapes and sizes.
2012 kicked off in triumph as OWSLA/Big Beat/Atlantic recording artist
Skrillex emerged as one of EDM's most acclaimed and popular artists. He was among the biggest winners at the 54th annual Grammy Awards, sweeping the Dance/Electronic categories: his RIAA gold-certified label debut, "SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES" was named "Best Dance/Electronica Album," with the album's platinum-certified title track declared the "Best Dance Recording." What's more, Skrillex's remix of Benny Benassi's "Cinema (Skrillex Remix)" received the Grammy for "Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical."
As if that weren't enough,
Skrillex continues to rule over the Grammy's "Dance/Electronica" categories, scoring three further nominations for the 55th annual awards presentation. The breakthrough "BANGARANG" was included among the "Best Dance/Electronica Album" nominees, with the collection's gold-certified title track, "Bangarang (Feat. Sirah)," also named in the "Best Dance Recording" category. In addition, Skrillex's remix of Nero's "Promises (Skrillex & Nero Remix)" received a "Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical" nod.
Big Beat also dominated the 2012 MTV Video
Music Awards, with clips by Skrillex,
Martin Solveig, and
Duck Sauce earning three out of the five total nods in the newly minted "Best Electronic Dance
Music Video" category. In addition,
Skrillex received the "Best Visual Effects" VMA for his haunting "First of the Year (Equinox)."
What's more, Big Beat also reaped an additional assortment of high profile awards and nominations. Neon/Axtone/Big Beat's "In My Mind (Axwell Remix)" -- performed by Ivan Gough &
Feenixpawl Feat. Georgi Kay and remixed by Axel Hedfors -- was nominated for a 2013 Grammy Award in the "Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical" category, while clips by three Big Beat artists -- Skrillex,
Martin Solveig, and
Porter Robinson -- received nods for MTV Clubland's "Video Pick of the Year." East London-based
Rudimental was among the "Best Newcomer" candidates for the 2012 MOBO Awards, while their hugely popular "
Feel The Love" was named "Best
Music Video" at this year's LA Shorts Fest, as well as iTunes "Song of the Year" in the Dance genre.
In addition to his many aforementioned nominations, superstar DJ/producer
Martin Solveig had his most brilliant year to date, with the full-length "SMASH" confirming his place as a leading light in 21st century electronic dance music. The album features a string of global dancefloor and pop hits, including "The Night Out and the multi-platinum global phenomenon, "Hello." A massive popular live DJ, Solveig also served as special guest on Madonna's blockbuster 2012 World Tour following his role as one of the primary producers of her chart-topping "MDNA."
Among the year's countless other high water marks, Porter Robinson's "
Language" debuted at #1 on Beatport's influential "Electro House" ranking before reaching the top position on the overall chart. In addition, "
Language" was also name the "#1 House Track of 2012" by the tastemaker dance blog, Less Than 3.
Knife Party made waves when "
Bonfire" -- included on the Australian dubstep duo's "RAGE VALLEY" EP -- was featured in AMC's Emmy Award-winning series, Breaking Bad. Rolling Stone took note, pointing out that "dubstep's vertiginous drops, gleeful lizard-brain button-punching and clattering discordant aggression, as exemplified in 'Bonfire' by
Knife Party, make it a weirdly perfect accompaniment to Walt's mad-science misadventures."
As ever, Big Beat is also developing a stunning range of rising EDM stars, including the Swedish electropop duo, Icona Pop. Hailed by Pitchfork as "textbook pop perfection," the exuberant duo scored a worldwide hit with "I Love It (Feat. Charli XCX)," featured on their "ICONIC" EP, as well as their self-titled debut album, which is currently slated for an early 2013 release.
Big Beat has also struck a fruitful relationship with the founding artists of infamous UK dubstep label, Circus Records, Flux Pavilion and Doctor P. A new slate of groundbreaking releases - including an all-new Flux Pavilion EP - are due next year.
