New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Following the release of soul stirring singles "Both Sides of the Moon," "
Lately" and "Father's Son," Brighton singer and songwriter
Celeste releases the 5-track Lately EP, today on Polydor Records/Universal Music. In addition to her previous singles, which drew universal praise from the likes of
Annie Mac,
Clara Amfo,
Julie Adenuga and more, not to mention one Elton John, the EP includes two brand new tracks, 'Summer' featuring Jeshi and 'Ugly Thoughts'. It's a striking body of work from one of 2019's brightest new acts.
To coincide with the release,
Celeste has announced a special London headline show on Wednesday May 8th at a secret E17 venue, following a highly anticipated run of North American dates including headline shows in Los Angeles and New York, appearances at SXSW and a performance at London's Oslo as part of
Annie Mac's AMP London takeover on March 27th.
Celeste will also perform at this year's Great Escape in Brighton on May 9th.
Speaking about the EP,
Celeste reveals, "I feel I have found my voice with this EP. I also got to collaborate and write with some people whose work I really admire - working with friends such as Jeshi & Tev'n came naturally, and resulted in one of my favourite songs being made, 'Summer'.
I also have 2 songs with Gotts Street Park on the EP 'Lately' & 'Both Sides of The Moon'. It was a murky February morning in Leeds when met Tom, Josh, Adam & Joe for the first time, and the first chords that they played as I walked into the basement studio became 'Both Sides Of The Moon'. I knew straight away I had made something that was going inform the sound for rest of the project.
'Ugly Thoughts' is the last song that came for the EP. I went to see Wilma Archer AKA Slime, a long awaited meeting for both of us we were suppose to meet in 2012 but somehow never got round to it! He played an instrumental piece of music he had made as an outro for his album, I asked if I could sing on it and so came 'Ugly Thoughts'. The song is about regretting your decision to cut someone off, maybe because you fear being to close to them, and wondering if it's too late to undo what's already been done?
And 'Fathers Son' is a song that I wanted to write for a long time. I felt it was important to write a song framing my Dad in a way that didn't feel too cliché so hopefully I have done that with this song."
The subtly devastating "Father's Son" saw spins from BBC
Radio 1's
Annie Mac and Huw Stephens, Rinse FM and 6Music's Tom Robinson to name a few, cementing
Celeste as one of 2019's biggest ones to watch. "
Lately" had support across
Radio 1, 1Xtra and Beats1 from the likes of Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart, Twin B,
Julie Adenuga and more, with the track first debuted in Celeste's Boiler Room session earlier this year before its official premiere on
Radio 1, with
Clara Amfo noting the track's "Amy Winehouse meets
Portishead vibes." "
Lately" followed October's spellbinding "Both Sides of the Moon," which caused
Elton John to remark on his Beats1 show, "Celeste is quite something else … watch out for her." He's not wrong.
