Carlson was born in Moose Lake, Minnesota, and made a name for herself playing throughout the mid-west. Word of her talent reached Nashville, and she soon found herself in
Music City - releasing a trio of singles for RCA Records. She also spent her time honing her skills as a staff songwriter for one of The Oak Ridge Boys' publishing companies.
In 1986, she founded the group Highway 101 with highly respected studio musicians Jack Daniels, Scott "Cactus" Moser, and Curtis Stone. The band's style of West Coast Country quickly found a home with Warner Brothers, where they instantly clicked at radio with the 1987 smash "The Bed You Made For Me." The success of that song, as well as follow-up hits "Cry, Cry, Cry," and "Whiskey, If You Were A Woman," led to their self-titled debut album being certified as Gold for sales in excess of 500,000 copies. They also were rewarded for their success with the Vocal Group of the Year awards from both the Academy of Country
Music and the Country
Music Association.
Future hits with the band also included "(Do You Love Me) Just Say Yes," "All The Reasons Why," and "Who's Lonely Now." In 1991, Carlson decided to go solo, charting the hit singles "I'll Start With You" and "Not With My
Heart You Don't." Her most recent studio project has been It's About Time, for which she supported with a tour of military bases - a cause near and dear to her heart. She also released a Christmas project in 2015, titled Christmas Is For You...
