NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Kris Kristofferson Fans Website) - Songwriter Vince Matthews died Saturday (Nov. 22) at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville. A friend and contemporary of Kris Kristofferson, who cited him by name in his eulogy for the late Johnny Cash, Matthews is best known for three songs, "Love in the Hot Afternoon," which he co-wrote with Kent Westberry and which, in 1975, became Gene Watson's first Top 5 hit; "On Susan's Floor," written with Shel Silverstein; and "This Is My Year for Mexico," a No. 21 single for Crystal Gayle in 1975. A spokesman for Saint Thomas said that Matthews had donated his body to science and said he had no information on the songwriter's age, cause of death, survivors or possible memorial services.
