The fun begins with a high-quality, 37-note mini keyboard that's sized for small hands without feeling toy-like. With 120 Voices (instrument sounds) sharing a heritage with those in professional Yamaha instruments, the PSS-F30 doesn't sound toy-like either. Children will delight in discovering not only traditional keyboard instruments like piano and organ, but guitar, bass, drums, synths, brass, strings, woodwinds, and non-Western instruments as well. There are even selections of dual Voices (two instrument sounds together) and split Voices (different sounds for the left and right hands).
Nothing is more fun than feeling like a one-kid band. This is why the PSS-F30 includes 114 accompaniment styles, which combine drum rhythms with full background instrumentation. Rock, jazz, country, waltz, and more are covered, including multi-cultural styles from across the globe. This encourages children to play songs in different ways and develop appreciation of all musical genres. Not to ignore the value of traditional piano practice, eight styles are devoted to accompanying it.
Using the Smart Chord function, a child can play one-finger chords in the lower range of the keyboard as the accompaniment styles follow along. This can be switched to full-fingered chords as learning progresses. Also, 30 fun, familiar tunes we all hear throughout our lives are built into the PSS-F30. Their tempo can be slowed down to make learning easier, or sped up to develop skill. A corresponding downloadable songbook lets parents participate in the ensuing musical adventures.
The PSS-F30 is intuitive to use, with controls relating to Voices color-coded in orange and anything about songs or accompaniment in yellow. By pressing the Function button then a key, the player can control all of the PSS-F30's settings, such as sustain, key transposition, a handy metronome, Smart Chord, and more.
Between its diminutive size and weight (under 20 inches wide; two pounds and ten ounces) and the fact that it can run on either four AA batteries or USB power (such as from a phone charger) using the included USB cable, the PSS-F30 can truly go anywhere. Plugging into the headphone jack mutes the internal speaker, and there are even parental controls over maximum headphone volume.
