New York, NY (Top40 Charts) In advance of announcing their debut release through Rufftone Records, Brooklyn-based A Tree Grows will appear at the 95 Starr Street Studio as part of this years' iconic art festival, Bushwick Open Studios (BOS). This instrumental four-piece smoothly combines elements of jazz, electronica and soul music in their compositions.
This annual two-day art event, which was created by the Arts in Bushwick community organization, takes place on October 1st and 2nd, during which time hundreds of local artists will open their studios to visitors. First held in 2006, this festival has become the largest open studio event in New York City and a true highlight for lovers of creativity and art.
Since it began, there has been a growing number of mixed media events at BOS, underlining the multi-faceted genre-crossing character of Bushwick, as demonstrated through the festival's events in 2016. A Tree Grows brings their ambient jazz stylings to provide a real-time soundtrack to visitors of 95 Starr Street Studio, which is showcasing oil paintings by artist Ayane Kurai, who hails from Kobe, Japan. Accliamed videographer Nicolas Zeig-Owens will also collaborate by filming and combining the performance with a collage of images from the festival; his film is planned for released later in October.
A Tree Grows is comprised of some of the most exciting creative musicians on the New York scene: Russell and Rashaan Carter, siblings from Washington, DC, have teamed up with keyboardist and composer
Emanuel Ruffler from Munich, Germany. Together they create a unique stew of afrobeat, rock and experimental sounds, over which Duane Eubanks and Tivon Penicott stretch a layer of raw, emotional jazz lines. Saxophonist Tivon Penicott has also become an international fixture in grammy winner Gregory Porter's band.
"It's inspiring to play in the company of such amazing work. The studio is this incubator for creative energy and it's nice to absorb that. The space plays an important role in a concert and one that houses and spawns creative work is always welcome." says Rashaan Carter, bassist in A Tree Grows.
The coming together of visual art, video, installation and music at Bushwick Open Studios creates a unique environment. This presents an opportunity for the audience to explore the art studio in a new way: as a place and time where different artistic disciplines meet, collaborate and inspire each other.
"I am a human first. I happen to be a painter and Japanese born. To display life, and to develop a big heart are the most important techniques and goals for me. I believe that my paintings follow me and grow with me just because painting is the voice of my soul," commented Ayane Kurai.
A Tree Grows plays on Saturday, October 1st at 6pm. 95 Starr Street Studio is located at 95 Star Street, Brooklyn, NY 11237.
