LOS ANGELES, CA (tedfalcon.com) - Los Angeles string master and Brazilian music virtuoso, Ted Falcon, performs with the prestigious Los Angeles Choro Ensemble and special guests at the Vic for Jazz, Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at 8:30 and 10:30 pm for the release party of his 4th CD, Memórias do Brasil.
The son of a professional jazz guitarist, Ted Falcon, grew up listening to the Brazilian music of Villa-Lobos, Tom Jobim and Luiz Bonfá. Further study of Brazilian choro music at Indiana University fueled his passion for the sound and brought him to forming his own group, the Los Angeles Choro Ensemble.
Recently returning from Rio de Janeiro, Falcon performed with Brazil's most respected and well known choro group, Época de Ouro, on live national radio. He has also studied and performed with reknown Brazilian musicians including Mauricio Carillho, Luciana Rabello, Pedro Amorim, Hamilton de Holanda, Joel Nascimento, Proveta, Guinga and pianist Jovino Santos Neto, who appears on the new CD. Here in the U.S., Ted has performed along side of American mandolin masters David Grisman, Mike Marshall and Don Stiernberg and recorded with Ben E. King and Suzanne Vega.
Memórias do Brasil is violinist Falcon's first mandolin recording in a program of elegant Brazilian choro and jazz. The CD features some originals and music from Jacob do Bandolim, Ernesto Nazareth, Hermeto Pascoal, Pixinguinha and Waldir Azevedo. This concert will feature the Los Angeles Choro Ensemble-Colin Walker-7 string guitar, Edson Gianesi-pandeiro , Andy Connell-clarinet, Mitchell Long-cavaquinho, Fabiano Nascimento-7 string guitar, Rebecca Kleinmann-flute, Ami Molinelli-percussion and Ted's father, Marvin Falcon on guitar.
Choro is experiencing a renaissance right now in Brazil. It is a living cousin to American ragtime and early jazz played in jam sessions nightly throughout Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and all of Brazil. Musicians of all ages are drawn to the beautiful melodies, the rich harmonies and the upbeat rhythms played on guitar, mandolin, percussion, cavaquinho, clarinet, flute and other instruments.
The Vic is one of Los Angeles' premiere showcases for jazz. It is an intimate venue, an old Victorian hotel, located in the heart of Santa Monica at 2640 Main Street, 90405. This concert is in part of their weekly series of World Music, 'Fission Wednesday's'. For more information about the Vic, see www.thevicforjazz.com or call 888.FOR.JAZZ (367-5299). Tickets are $15 + 2 items.
