DETROIT, (Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts) -
Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts announced today that two newly formed funding organizations, the Gretchen C. Valade Endowment for the Arts and the
Detroit International Jazz Festival Foundation, will provide a $10 million endowment to ensure the continuation and growth of one of Detroit's most beloved signature cultural events for decades to come.
The new festival foundation is already planning a larger, more expanded 2006 Detroit International Jazz Festival that will build upon the unprecedented success of the 2005 festival. The 2006 festival will take place in downtown Detroit Labor Day weekend, September 1-4, 2006.
The new festival foundation will provide staffing for nearly all aspects of festival activities including programming, marketing, sponsorship and operations. The transference of the day-to-day responsibilities of the Jazz Fest to the foundations will enable Music Hall to concentrate its efforts on programming theatre, dance, concerts and educational programs in the historic venue. Although the new festival foundation will now be responsible for producing the festival, Music Hall will continue its participation in the festival by continuing to manage the youth education aspects of the festival, including programming scholastic bands (400 student musicians) and overseeing educational outreach opportunities. In addition, a number of Music Hall trustees and other community members will assist the Jazz Fest by serving on the festival foundation's general advisory committee.
As part of its further partnership with Music Hall, the Gretchen C. Valade Endowment for the Arts and Mack Avenue Records will serve as major sponsors of a new Jazz concert series that will be held at Music Hall during the course of each year. More details regarding the new Music Hall Jazz series will be announced later.

Music Hall and the 2005 Jazz Fest's title sponsor, Mack Avenue Records, a Detroit based jazz label owned by Gretchen Valade, partnered this year to present the most critically acclaimed and best attended Jazz Fest ever. The event featured four stages of jazz on Hart Plaza, two stages of Motown, rhythm & blues and gospel at stages on Jefferson Avenue/Woodward Avenue and Campus Martius Park. Attendance over the Labor Day weekend was estimated at one million people - nearly doubling the crowds of previous years. Over 100 acts were featured including Dave Brubeck, McCoy Tyner, Gerald Wilson Orchestra, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Dr. John and the Funk Brothers.
Since 1928, Music Hall has provided diverse cultural and educational programming to the people of southeastern Michigan. In addition to outstanding concerts, Music Hall presents Broadway style musicals and plays, world class modern dance and related educational activities in an intimate, beautiful setting that provides excellent sightlines and near perfect acoustics. Music Hall is a 501 C 3 not for profit organization.
