LOS ANGELES (Hip-O Records) - A three-time Academy Award nominee, director Michael Mann has once again gathered an eclectic group of musical artists to provide the musical backdrop for his new thriller "Collateral," starring Tom Cruise,
Jamie Foxx and Jada Pinkett Smith and opening nationwide on August 6, 2004.
Michael Mann has been changing the role of film and television music since the 1980s, when he executive produced the landmark television series "Miami Vice." He continues to break new ground with the music for "Collateral."
COLLATERAL: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK, arriving in stores on August 3, 2004 (Hip-O Records), features songs from such wide-ranging musical talents as The Roots, Audioslave, Paul Oakenfold, Miles Davis, Calexico, The Klazz Brothers and others. Tracks include "Briefcase" and "Rollin' Crumblin'" from Tom Rothrock, best-known as a producer for Beck and the late Elliott Smith; and scores cues "Car Crash" and "Requiem" from Brazilian composer Antonio Pinto, widely acclaimed for his scores for two Oscar-nominated foreign language films, CITY OF GOD and CENTRAL STATION.
COLLATERAL also boasts a score by James Newton Howard, a five-time Oscar nominee (among them THE PRINCE OF TIDES, THE FUGITIVE and MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING). The soundtrack album includes four excerpts from his score.
Among the previously released is a track from The Roots from their 2002 album PHRENOLOGY, COLLATERAL includes "The Seed (2.0)," featuring neo-soulster Cody ChesnuTT.
Audioslave adds "Shadow On The Sun" from the 2002 self-titled debut album that brought together Soundgarden's Chris Cornell and members of Rage Against The Machine.
From Miles, COLLATERAL culls "Spanish Key," featuring guitarist John McLaughlin, from the trumpeter's landmark 1969 album Bitches Brew, considered the jazz album that most influenced rock and funk and spawned the jazz-rock fusion revolution.
Another revolutionary, Oakenfold, is heard with a remix of "Ready Steady Go" with Korean vocals, which first appeared on BUNKKA, the 2002 album from the world's leading DJ and the producer most responsible for Madchester.
Also the ballad "Hands Of Time" from Groove Armada's 2003 album LOVEBOX, featuring the distinctive voice of singer/songwriter Richie Havens.
Calexico, a group spun off from Tucson neo-lounge combo Friends Of Dean Martinez, contributes "Guero Canelo" from its 2003 album FEAST OF WIRE. The Green Car Motel (once known as Act Of Faith) offer "Destino de Abril," led by Texas singer-songwriter Rick Garcia and Rene Reyes, who recently penned/performed songs for THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE JOB. "Air," from the Klazz Brothers & Cuba Percussion, was originally issued in Europe in 2002 on their CLASSIC MEETS CUBA album. The "brothers" are two Germans who fell in love with Cuban music during a visit and began adapting popular classical pieces with an Afro-Cuban style.
A co-production of DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures, "Collateral" stars Tom Cruise as Vincent, a contract killer hired by an offshore narcotrafficking cartel to stop a federal indictment against them by killing the five key witnesses against them... tonight.
Circumstances cause Vincent to hijack Max's taxicab, and Max (Jamie Foxx) becomes collateral - an expendable person in the wrong place at the wrong time. Through the night Vincent forces Max to drive him to each assigned destination. And as the LAPD and FBI race to intercept them, Max and Vincent's survival becomes dependent on each other in ways neither would have imagined.
"Collateral" is produced by Michael Mann and Julie Richardson from a screenplay by Stuart Beattie. Frank Darabont, Chuck Russell, Rob Fried and Peter Giuliano served as executive producers.
