New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Florence and the Machine contributed a new song entitled "Over the Love" to the soundtrack for the forthcoming remake of The Great Gatsby. While Ms. Welch's presence may have been slightly overshadowed by executive producer
Jay-Z and an
Amy Winehouse cover by Beyoncé and André 3000, she seems to have at least read the book prior to recording her contribution.
Welch has seemingly crafted the song from the perspective of
Daisy Buchanan, Gatsby's lifelong crush, embodying the cynical regret she felt for abandoning Gatsby ("Cause you're a hard soul to save with an ocean in the way, but I'll get around it") with a little light piano and her trademark heart-wrenching wail. Stream it below (via Top40-Charts.com).
The soundtrack also features contributions from Jack White, U2, The xx, and Bryan Ferry, and will be available digitally and as a 17-track deluxe edition exclusively at Target beginning May 7th. A 14-track physical version will also be available at Starbucks in the U.S. and Canada, and widely, both physically and digitally, at various retailers. Below, check out a sampler for the soundtrack featuring various snippets from the soundtrack.
The Great Gatsby is directed by Baz Luhrmann, stars
Leonardo DiCaprio, Isla Fisher, and Tobey Maguire, and is set to hit theaters on May 10th.
