New York, NY (Top40 Charts) I want my REMTV! Fathom Events, in partnership with Rhino Entertainment, announced today the next concert event in the "Classic
Music Series" - Classic
Music Series:
R.E.M. by MTV. Coming to select U.S. movie theaters nationwide on Tuesday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m. (local time),
R.E.M. by MTV, tells the story of thirty years of the GRAMMY Award-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers from their early days in Athens, GA through to stadium tours around the world. Drawing on archival footage from the MTV vaults, the film traces
R.E.M. in real time, which makes it feel as exciting and immediate as it did when it was happening. This exclusive cinema event includes famous
R.E.M. interviews with Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart, television performances, award show appearances, clips from live concerts and more.
Tickets for "R.E.M. by MTV" are available at participating theater box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com. The event will be presented in approximately 300 select movie theaters around the country through Fathom's
Digital Broadcast Network. For a complete list of theater locations visit the Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change).
"Alexander Young's documentary is a fine way to tell the story of
R.E.M. through its various twists and turns, as captured in real time by MTV's cameras-- it has some great funny bits too!" said longtime
R.E.M. manager Bertis Downs.
MTV and
R.E.M. came of age together and for decades were inexorably intertwined. Singer Michael Stipe, guitarist
Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry formed
R.E.M. in 1980, with the band releasing its first single just weeks before MTV hit the airwaves in 1981. From the start, MTV documented R.E.M,'s music and stories, and ultimately, their decision to disband in 2011.
R.E.M. by MTV, a feature-length documentary directed by
Alexander Young, compiles footage from the vaults of MTV and their domestic and international sister networks to tell the group's tale from start to end.
Fathom Events Vice President of Programming Kymberli Frueh-Owens said, "We are pleased to bring this event to select cinemas nationwide. 'R.E.M. by MTV' is a fascinating documentary that perfectly traces not only the entire career of one of the most influential alternative rock acts, but the network that changed how fans saw their favorite bands."
This is the fourth event in the "Classic
Music Series," following the successful "Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014" in February, "Classic
Music Series: Led Zeppelin" in March and
Grateful Dead Annual Meet Up in May. The series will continue to feature at least one iconic band each month.
