New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Recording Academy) - The GRAMMY Foundation announced today that 84 talented high school students from 75 cities and 23 states across the United States have been selected as participants in the fifth annual GRAMMY Camp. From July 11 - 19, these students will work with GRAMMY Award-winning and -nominated professionals and industry specialists affiliated with The Recording Academy to experience an immersive, interactive and highly collaborative residential summer music camp. GRAMMY Camp is sponsored in part by Epiphone. Other product sponsors include Apple, Center Staging, Coca Cola, Converse, Digidesign, Guitar Center, Line 6, Mackie, Shure and others.

"GRAMMY Camp is one of the GRAMMY Foundation's most exciting GRAMMY in the Schools programs, and it provides an exceptional opportunity for young people looking to explore the range of possibilities that a career in music can provide," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation. "GRAMMY Camp provides instruction focused on all aspects of commercial music by industry professionals in a creative environment with access to cutting-edge technology. When you take that setting and add close to 100 talented students from across the country, it's a recipe for a remarkable and indelible experience. I am especially proud this year that we're continuing our practice of offering financial assistance to qualified students."

The list of guest artists and music industry professionals participating in the 2009 GRAMMY Camp will be announced shortly. Past teaching artists include: singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles; producer Warryn Campbell; recording artist Brandi Carlile; GRAMMY Award-winning songwriter/producer/recording artist Lamont Dozier; multi-GRAMMY-winning group Earth, Wind & Fire; DJ Faust; multi-GRAMMY-winning producer David Foster; four-time GRAMMY winner and Recording Academy Chair Emeritus/GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares Board member Jimmy Jam; singer/songwriter Josh Kelley; saxophonist Dave Koz; songwriter/producer/recording artist Jeff Lorber; multi-GRAMMY-winning producer Manny Marroquin; recording artist Jesse McCartney; Minor Productions Inc. President/CEO and "American Idol" and the GRAMMY Awards music director Rickey Minor; multi-GRAMMY-winning group Ozomatli; Recording Academy, GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares President/CEO Neil Portnow; DJ Shortee; GRAMMY-winning guitarist Steve Vai; Sublime bassist Eric Wilson; and GRAMMY-winning film composer Hans Zimmer.

The curriculum engages students in the technical aspects of creating, performing and recording and emphasizes new and emerging music technologies. The program offers 10 music career tracks: Audio Engineering; Concert Promotion/Production; Electronic Music Production; Music Journalism; and performance tracks in Bass; Drums; Guitar; Keyboard; Songwriting; and Winds & Strings. All tracks culminate in media projects, CD recordings and/or showcase performances. The showcase concert will be held this year on July 18 at the GRAMMY Museum theater. GRAMMY Camp will be held at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music and other professional venues throughout Los Angeles. Financial assistance for GRAMMY Camp is offered to qualified students; this year, a portion of these resources was generously provided by ASCAP, the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Fund, and the Ford Motor Company Fund.

The GRAMMY Foundation was established in 1989 to cultivate the understanding, appreciation and advancement of the contribution of recorded music to American culture - from the artistic and technical legends of the past to the still unimagined musical breakthroughs of future generations of music professionals. The Foundation accomplishes this mission through programs and activities that engage the music industry and cultural community as well as the general public. The Foundation works in partnership year-round with its founder, The Recording Academy, to bring national attention to important issues such as the value and impact of music and arts education and the urgency of preserving our rich cultural heritage.
