New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Angie McMahon has released Piano Salt, a new seven-song collection from the rising Australian songwriter which includes re-worked versions of five originals from her debut album Salt plus covers of Bruce Springsteen's "The River" and Lana Del Rey's "Born To Die." McMahon had previously shared "The River" and a stripped-down version of her own "Soon," which Nylon hailed as "a clean, piano-backed stunner." Consequence of Sound also praised the release, adding that "with all the instrumentation stripped away...this young artist's songwriting is perhaps more impactful than ever."

"Piano is the first instrument I learnt and the one that made me first love singing," says McMahon. "My favourite piano song when I was young was k.d lang's cover of Hallelujah. So this EP feels like a return to my piano-cover-loving inner kid. It's been a really nice creative opportunity to recreate the feeling of some bigger songs off my first record, give them a new life, and cover some of my favourite songs too. It gave me something to do when we went into quarantine. The creative process also helped me shed some fear around sounding too cheesy on the piano, or too sad - I realised that doesn't matter so much because I just love to play and sing."

Piano Salt is McMahon's first new collection of music since experiencing a true US breakout in 2019, which included winning the Grulke Prize for Best Developing International Act at SXSW (previously won by Courtney Barnett, CHVRCHES and Jade Bird), making her debut at the Newport Folk Festival, garnering comparisons to Fiona Apple and Fleetwood Mac from NPR Music and touring the country with Hozier. McMahon will perform each song from Piano Salt virtually on October 7 with support from Los Angeles musician Jensen McRae.
