photoReleases by Gorillaz, Air, At The Drive In, Ryan Adams, Bilal, White Stripes, and Foxy Brown are among the nominees for the first-ever Shortlist Prize for Artistic Achievement in Music, which, last month, is designed to honor contemporary music's most creative and adventurous releases.

The honor, patterned after the U.K.'s Mercury Music Prize, will be handed out Oct. 30 in Los Angeles. Nominees were selected by a panel of 15 musicians and industry figures, including Beck, Macy Gray, Dave Grohl, Aimee Mann, Trent Reznor, Lucinda Williams, ?uestlove from the Roots, Dan the Automator, KCRW-FM's Nic Harcourt, Urb magazine editor Raymond Roker, and producers Steve Lillywhite and Ross Robinson.

Albums released after June 30, 2000, are eligible, as long as they have not sold more than 500,000 units. A list of 10 finalists will be announced Wednesday (Oct. 3). Included among the 49 albums proposed by the panel are:

Air, "10,000 HZ Legend"
At The Drive In, "Relationship of Command"
Basement Jaxx, "Rooty"
Beta Band, "Hot Shots II"
Bilal, "1st Born Second"
Daft Punk, "Discovery
Dandy Warhols, "Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia"
Foxy Brown, "Broken Silence"
Gorillaz, "Gorillaz"
PJ Harvey, "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea"
Roni Size/Reprazent, "In the Mode"
Ryan Adams, "Heartbreaker"
Sigur Ros, "Agaetis Byrjun"
Tortoise, "Standards"
White Stripes, "White Blood Cells"
