New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Psychedelic band, Hipnotics, just dropped their debut single, "Preacher Man," which showcases both their eclectic disposition and a touch of punk inclinations. "Preacher Man" is the leading single off their upcoming LP, Drunk, Naked & Dreaming, due out this fall. "Preacher Man" is available now on Bandcamp.
Complete with vigorous guitar riffs and a punchy percussion at the top of the track, sets the tone for the melodic rock to come. Matt Ernst introduces his tortured, honest vocals right off the bat, as they tease between Ernst's raspy tone and the bands graceful harmonies. Much like the band members, "Preacher Man" obtains a sense of boldness and honesty as they navigate through self-exploration and life's uncertainties. "Preacher Man" is the band's endeavor to illustrate what materializes when communities throw religious sanctity and the idea of a "divine plan" at everyone they come across. Creating a deep irony of those that sermonize at you, Ernst reminds he isn't the "preacher man". The songs deep meaning was inspired by Ernst's childhood experience at a religious school. "I was forced fed sermons down my throat, yet I never understood the messages they were trying to send to me", says Ernst. Revolting against this forced knowledge his vocals jump perfectly from the calm bellowing to shouting, as he's supported by Zack Apple's skillful work on the organ and Sean Conway's bouncy and head-bopping bass line. Josh Apple keeps the track moving like lightning with his contribution on the crunchy drums, while Zach Rose brings their diverse style together with warm vibe of the saxophone. Enlisting the help of producer Shea Welsh and engineer Chris Mullings (Bryan Ferry, The Neighbourhood, LP), Hipnotics were able to take their psychedelic sound and add a dimension of explosive contemporary edge. This team were also key players in the making of their album, Drunk, Naked & Dreaming coming this fall.
Matt Ernst and Josh Apple began playing music together as young teenagers and would eventually form the band with Zack Apple. Recruiting Sean Conway on bass and Zach Rose on saxophone; solidified the Hipnotics lineup and furthered their original sound. Drawing from indie, progressive, psychedelic, and garage rock, the Hipnotics succeed in balancing these influences seamlessly with a rich sonic landscape of truly eclectic psychedelic rock. Their music is about finding liberation through losing control and tearing down the wall of societies status quo.
Ready to contemplate the weight of existentialism in one moment and switch to the urge to pound a drink and head to the dance floor in the next, Hipnotics are always prepared for the twists and turns of life. It is this unpredictability in their psychedelic freak-out approach to rock that makes them so enticing and a band to watch in the Los Angeles music scene.
